+1 for setExecutable (I'd prefer set_executable, to be PEP 8 compliant). Make it explicit, rather than fiddling with stuff in sys manually.
That is easy to do.
Also note - someone just pointed out to me that the executable manipulation as-is breaks when you execute things within IDLE.
I'll add all of this to the PEP.
