I know I'm coming into this discussion late, but why even involve CFLAGS?
Because without it, autoconf won't detect that large file support is available, and fail to define HAVE_LARGEFILE. This is because configure uses CFLAGS on its own for the test scripts, but won't use OPT. I don't think anything in the configure machinery should change for 2.1.2, since 2.2 does it all in a different and better way. Regards, Martin
