Python Bug Day in October

Hi all, The Montreal-Python user group would like to host a bug day on October 27 (to be confirmed) at a partner university in Montreal. It would be cool to do a bug day on IRC like we used to (and in other physical locations if people want to!) to get new contributors and close bugs. What do you think? Cheers

Sounds good to me, and I'll see if I can get some interest in having a meetup in Chicago. Would be nice to try and get all of the implementations to join in. Whenever a final date is picked out, I'll write something up and publicize it on the PSF blog, dev blog, pythonsprints.com, etc.

All that is needed for an IRC bug day to happen is for someone to coordinate and advertise it. It sounds like you and Brian between you have that covered. Of course, it does help to have committers on hand. I think I for one will probably be available during the day (EST) on the 27th. --David

Sounds good to me. I'm currently gathering a list [1] of easy and easyish issues for the PyCon Finland sprint, because finding things to work on is (in my opinion) the hardest and most time consuming part of bug fixing. I'm going to organize the list in the same way the stdlib documentation [2] is split into sections, so there should be something to work on for everyone, regardless of their interest area. PyCon Finland is on October 22-23, and I expect most of the list remain unused, so maybe it could also be used in the bug day afterwards. What do you think? Petri [1] http://piratepad.net/pyconfi-sprint-issues [2] http://docs.python.org/dev/library/

Hi, Cool to see the positive response! I’m waiting for confirmation of our venue in Montreal and will follow-up on this list and update the wiki page. Petri, your lists of bugs will definitely be helpful. Thanks all!

Eric, How do you and Montreal-Pythoon user group see possibility to move this event a little bit in time, to have enough time to organize everything what's needed. In most cases peoples here in Poland. How about doing this event whole month later, meaning end of November? If we all get enough time to prepare and advertise it properly, we might attract bigger group of people, which in long term means more hands to work on bugs :) Regards, Maciej

You could also wait three months and get even more people, or wait 6 months and maybe get even *more* people. You could also lose everyone else's interest during that time. I think if people want to join up on the chosen date, it'd be excellent. If they want to meet up on another date, this is also excellent. It doesn't need to be a one time thing :)

Yes. I think there are people already trying to to (or perhaps even succeeding) in arranging spaces for that date, so changing it would be a disruption to those plans. On the other hand we could also let those people speak up... Having another one at the end of November would be great. --David

Ned: I’m confident we’ll have a place for the planned date, you can make arrangements and we’ll confirm as soon as possible (this week). Maciej: If you don’t think you can let people know in time, by all means lead another bug day some time after, and I’m sure there will be participants on IRC. Cheers

Hello, We confirm October 27! User groups and devs on IRC, join us if you can. I’ll send an announcement to the mentoring list to let subscribers know about the event. Cheers

Apologies if this is a stupid question (or just completely misdirected), but does this mean that if I'm interested in participating in the bug day, the first step should be to join core-mentorship@? Thanks! ChrisA

Thanks. I've joined the list (as if I needed *still more* email in my inbox... heh), as it seems the best way to get those critical details of start/end times, IRC channel, etc, etc. Thanks for organizing this. It's a good excuse/opportunity to get started! ChrisA

It's two and a half weeks left, but I've not seen any announcements yet! Also, my issue list at http://piratepad.net/pyconfi-sprint-issues still lacks entries, so everyone interested in making the bug day a huge success is welcome to add issues to the list. It doesn't need registration or anything, just open it in your browser and edit. Petri

This is very disappointing. You had previously said that it was a go. People (who may or may not have spoken up here) may have already arranged space and be planning on it, despite the lack of announcement. I certainly was planning on it. I'm not available on the 3rd. I'll continue with my plans to be active in the IRC channel and focused on Python bug fixing this Saturday from some time in the AM until about 18:00, GMT -4. If no one else shows up I'll just have a personal bug day, but I'm guessing at least a few people might show up despite the lack of a wider formal announcement. --David

Okay, I was assuming silence meant the user groups had made no definite arrangements. The decision of not having a physical sprint in Montreal doesn't have to affect the whole day, so I will be connected from home, and the other people who wanted to participate can join in. To make it clear: Bug day on IRC this Saturday is still on. I'm updating the old wiki page to point to the new devguide and Petri's bug list. - http://docs.python.org/devguide/ - http://piratepad.net/pyconfi-sprint-issues Sorry for the confusion.

Nothing was formally planned to happen in Chicago due to the usual lack of interest, and I doubt that'll change for November 3rd. I would suggest just going on with whatever sprint date(s) your group is able to make it for. This is already very loosely organized as it is, so trying to coordinate multiple groups in multiple cities is not worth it. Anyway, I'll probably be around this Saturday and November 3rd to put in some work.

Eric, We have a meeting tomorrow, I'll talk to guys, but because we're starting Silesian Python Group, there won't be much interest yet. I'll try to work on that ;) maybe some time in future I could organize this kind of event and invite all of you to join us. Nonetheless I'll try to join both events, on this and next Saturday on IRC.
