I'll refer you all to the copy of random.py you have on your hard-disks, to line 68, where a function new_generator(a=None) is defined, merely returning generator(a=None). I wonder who put it there, and why. At least to simplify the weirdness, we could change it to
# for backwards compatability new_generator = generator
Which would work for all but the most obscure hacks.
