It's still (or again?) failing for me...
Ah, it works again!
I'll assume its a transient problem for now. If it persists we should
file a
support request later.

Jack Jansen,
Hi Anthony!
After quite some time of not working, it of course started working 2 minutes after I sent this email. *sigh*
cvs: less bad than the alternatives...
Have you tried subversion? We've been using it here for some time now. With this experience in mind, I'd say cvs is a lot worse than this alternative. :-) -- Gustavo Niemeyer http://niemeyer.net

I've been using svn also for some time now. While it definitely has advantages, I also see a number of new problems: dav_svn is *much* slower than cvs-over-ssh, and it is also less convenient, since there is no real equivalent of ssh-agent for svn. Regards, Martin

We have been using Subversion for a few months now. dav_svn is painfully slow and we quickly moved to using svnserve+ssh. It's not quite as fast as CVS but tolerable.
and it is also less convenient, since there is no real equivalent of ssh-agent for svn.
I take it you don't know about svnserve? Neil

That would require local users. On the machine that runs the repository, this is not feasible, unfortunately (so CVS would be no option)

How does that help me in not having to type the password on each commit? I was shocked that svn would store the password typed *in the clear*, and in some release even *in the sandbox*. Now it still stores it in the home directory, which isn't much better... If you disable that, you have to type the password every time. svn+ssh-agent would be a solution, but, as I said, not in our case. Regards, Martin

Previously you said: dav_svn is *much* slower than cvs-over-ssh, and it is also less convenient, since there is no real equivalent of ssh-agent for svn My point is that if you use svn+ssh, it is much faster than dav_svn and you can use ssh-agent. Are you now saying you can't use cvs-over-ssh? If so then I don't understand why you are talking about ssh-agent for CVS. In any case, this is all pretty off topic for python-dev so I'm going to shutup now. :-) Neil

I still am not able to complete a checkout/update as an anonymous user. For the meantime, please could somebody provide snapshots (maybe weekly) on some site? Thanks, Matthias

I have now created http://www.dcl.hpi.uni-potsdam.de/home/loewis/python.tgz This is a daily snapshot, created from downloading the daily CVS tarball and checking out the HEAD revision, at 2:45 local time (MESZ). Regards, Martin
