Python 2.4b1 on win32 installer bug?
here it is.. actually quite simple, the option not to register extensions simply unregisters them.... thanks. -- Alex.

I can't reproduce this, on XPSP2. If I install 2.3.4, then install 2.4b1, not selecting "register extensions", then run the program print sys.version it still prints 2.3.4. If I then invoke the MSI file again, chose "Change Python", install the extensions, the same program will print 2.4b1. If I then Change Python again, uninstalling the extensions, nothing will be associated anymore; this is (somewhat) intentional. What precisely did you do? Regards, Martin

I could not reproduce it, but also was confused by the behaviour. Can it be that deinstallation of Python-2.4a3.msi (which I did before 2.4b1 was installed) removed the association of Python files with Python-2.3? Thomas

I don't call exactly, but this could very well be possible. When I tried to support advertising extensions, a side effect was that not installing the extensions would just remove the previous extensions; this is meant to be fixed in 2.4b1. Also, upgrading from 2.4a3 (with extensions installed) to 2.4b1 (with no extensions) would have the same effect - there is simply no support for restoring older versions of the extensions when uninstalling (and upgrading from 2.4a3 to 2.4b1 is actually the same as uninstalling 2.4a3 first). Regards, Martin
Another thing I noticed is that there is no icon shown in the start menu for the 'Python Manuals' entry, unless you have clicked the shortcut at least one time. Thomas

I know, and I don't know what to do about that. Including the icon for .chm files within the MSI package might help, but I'm unsure whether this is legally possible. I'm still looking for a good solution, but likely, this problem will also show up in 2.4. Regards, Martin
