Well, you can't buid a C compiler without a C compiler either (or SOME compiler). And given that you should be able to do cross-compilation for platforms that don't currently have a python build, I'm not sure that's a killer.

It's not as much "Python eat its own dog food" as "cross-compiling natively would be even harder than it is right now." C compilers are available on virtually every UNIX that's ever been created since the 70's, including AIX, Plan 9, Solaris, etc. Python? Not as much.
