tkinter is a wrapper around TK -- so it's TK that would need to "modernize"

I used to use wxPython, but it bugs and platform specific quirky drove me to port to PyQt and I have not regreted that decision.

native support to Windows, OS-X, *nix/GTK

The install story is SO much better now that the "built in" advantage of tkinter is no longer such a big deal.
