This all sounds very exciting, but also like a huge amount of work.
Indeed. But that's what we're here for. Anyway, as an indication of the amount of work, you might want to look at the fpectl module -- the module itself is tiny, but its introduction required a huge amount of changes to every place where CPython uses a double. I don't know if anybody uses it, though it's still in the Py3k codebase. -- --Guido van Rossum (python.org/~guido)
