I would really like to see the functionality discussed in this thread. I have no deep knowledge about Windows, MacOS or FreeBSD though, which would make it hard for me to take this on my own.
If we could get together a team with knowledgeable people from each platform, that would be great.

As someone who had to work with temporary files in the past, this appeals to me. I develop on Windows, and the program was not meant to be used on non-Windows platforms, so I used a lot of platform-dependant hacks I wish I could not use.
