I was just thinking along those same lines. Sounds like twisted already
does it. Does it amount to using a custom __import__?

What would be useful from time to time is a more straightforward way of getting a module that's based on a subclass of the built-in module class. While that's currently possible, it requires some not-entirely-obvious hackery.
