I think I was misunderstood -- my point was that there is no reason to start all this with trying to persuade the python dev team to accept a new build system up front.

The only possible way it could happen were if someone(s) did the work and got a new system in place that worked well and proved to be better than autoconf in various ways, while being just as capable. And that would be LOT of work to get that far.

But it could be done without having to persuade anyone up front that it 's a good idea.

Frankly, I doubt anyone's going to put that work in -- I know I won't -- remember that I'm one of the folks that's skeptical that this mythical build system exists at all -- never mind the work to transition to it.
