My main reaction would be that if Drekin (Adam Bartoš) agrees the changes natively solve the problems that https://pypi.python.org/pypi/win_unicode_console works around, it's probably a good idea.
Also, a reminder that Adam has a couple of proposals on the tracker aimed at getting CPython to use a UTF-16-LE console on Windows: http://bugs.python.org/issue22555#msg242943 (last two issue references in that comment)
