Volunteers and case studies wanted for ACCU
by Andy Robinson March 5, 2004

March 5, 2004

It's now 6 weeks to the ACCU event and the UK Python Conference. I know many of you have registered already, and suspect others would like to but find the hundred-pounds plus a bit steep. We're going to try very hard to promote the Open Source Forum and are looking for help. (1) Interviewer/writer. Someone to do what Tom Deprez did for EuroPython: interview key speakers via email, and put the interviews on the site. This will give us an excuse to email the world about the event as each one goes up, and provide lots of useful content for the personalized programs. We would offer free admission. (2) Case Studies: the Open Source event needs case studies about Open Source adoption or migration, preferably in impressive sounding contexts. The format is likely to be a "lightning talk" on the end of the appropriate panel. Naturally we want the world to know that Python is one of the key Open Source technologies. If you have been involved in something substantial and worth talking about, let me know! The programme is here: http://www.reportlab.com/conferences/accu2004/opensource.html (note, this is a temporary location, it moves to accu.org next week) In particular I am sure there are many, many Zope applications in wide use... Some site improvements for the conference...
by Andy Robinson March 5, 2004

March 5, 2004

My colleagues and I have had to help the ACCU with a facelift of their site, at least partially so we could credibly advertise the Open Source event. As part of this I did a better page for the Python event. This was in the last hour and somewhat sleep deprived :-) This is in a temporary review location here: http://www.reportlab.com/conferences/accu2004/python.html Comments and feedback welcome! It should move to the main site on Monday, and we should be able to refresh it easily thereafter. > a very good London place for computer books is the Holborn computer bookshop Funnily enough I bought Learning Python 2nd Ed from there in January. And I would normally go there. But I was in Charing X Road on some other business and popped in to Borders and Blackwells on the way home. Francis. Tim, > I would recommend it highly as a must-have on your bookshelf if you;re > in the windows space! Ah, therein lies the problem. I have some development work to do, and I'd like to use Python to do it. But I wanted to have a look at the book to see whether what I wanted to do was possible. If it is then the book would be ideal. If it isn't then the book might become just another 'dust gatherer'. I'll look at the other Tim's copy first and then decide whether to get my own. Cheers, Francis. CONFIDENTIALITY NOTICE This communication contains information which is confidential and may also be privileged. It is for the exclusive use of the intended recipient(s). Python Programming on Win32
by Francis Moore March 2, 2004

March 2, 2004

Hi, I recently went into a bookshop in London (Blackwell's Charing X Road) to look through 'Python Programming on Win32' by Mark Hammond and Andy Robinson. Couldn't find it so asked an assistant whether it was in stock or due to be ordered in. He looked it up on his screen and then remarked that they probably wouldn't bother getting it in unless I specifically ordered it as it was 4 years old and probably out of date. So my question is, can anyone on this list actually recommend/not recommend this book? If not, are there any alternative references to help develop Python code on Windows platforms? Cheers, Francis. While I think of it, a very good London place for computer books is the Holborn computer bookshop (or whatever it's called). Its website is at: http://www.holbornbooks.co.uk/ and it's just off Southampton Row, a minute's walk from Holborn station. Tim, That's very kind of you. And very prompt ;-) I'd be more than happy for you to send the book to me (at my expense), for me to peruse it and and then return it at some point. If you're in agreeance I'll email you my address offline. Cheers, Francis. CONFIDENTIALITY NOTICE This communication contains information which is confidential and may also be privileged.
