Folks, The next London code dojo will take place on 7th July at the usual place at the usual time, the offices of Fry-IT at 6:30pm (for pizza and beer). [ANNOUNCE] Dynamic Languages conference 2011

Hi all, I wanted to let you know about a conference we are organising in Edinburgh which (some of) you may be interested in. The Dynamic Languages Conference has officially opened its website to registrations at http://www.dynamiclanguages.co.uk. The Dynamic Languages Conference (26th-27th August) is a new, free of charge, event held in Edinburgh to coincide with the parent festival, the Turing Festival (http://www.turingfestival.com, 26th-28th August) which is the European Festival of Digital Culture and Technology (EFDCT), an official part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the world’s greatest cultural and artistic event. Dynamic Languages Conference has been sponsored by a number of organisations. The conference is aimed at bringing the Open Source Dynamic Languages together at one event where they can discuss in an open forum and compare the various methods they employ to achieve similar goals. We welcome people from any of the Dynamic Languages such as Perl, Ruby (including the Rails community), Python, PhP, Javascript etc., our goal is inclusion and sharing of experience and approach. This year we are seeking speakers to talk on one of two subjects: Dynamic Language and Application Development for the Internet which will be the Friday track; Dynamic Languages and System Administration which is the Saturday Track. This event, Dynamic Languages, is free though you will need to register to obtain a ticket to the whole of the event. The parent festival (Turing Festival) which runs over the same period has also launched its site and invites people to attend for a modest fee. We are seeking speakers to attend the festival and they can also register and submit talks through our website athttp://www.dynamiclanguages.co.uk. There will be guest speakers talking at both the Dynamic Languages and Turing Festival. We are pleased to announce that the well known Richard Stallman will be our guest of honour and will speak at both the Dynamic Languages and the Turing Festival event. If you do not have an Act account already please use the new user link to register for this event, Act only keeps your details for conference registration with other Act events it is not used for any other purpose or passed to a third party, you can then submit a talk or make your conference schedule when we publish. The closing date for talks is Friday 29th July and the Schedule will be released on Monday 8th August. The Dynamic Languages event will be held in the magnificent Surgeon’s Hall on the Friday (26th August), and the Informatics Building on the Saturday (27th August). The Dynamic Languages event has been originally organised by members of the Glasgow and NorthWestEngland Perl Mongers groups though we are seeking help/support from any other open source language group, if you are a member of such a group, or a leader then we would be happy to hear from you and to work with you to invite your community to this event. We are still seeking keynote speakers who may be able to gain sponsorship to the event. Python User Group International Survey

The PSF is happy to launch today an international survey of Python user group organizers to help it better serve the large and ever-expanding international Python user community. The survey contains questions on user group organization, events, demographics, and growth. There are some questions with numerical answers, and while your best guess is fine, you may find it helpful to gather some statistics on your user group membership before starting the survey (example statistics include the number of active members and the size and topics for recent user group events). We expect this survey to take around 30 minutes to complete. We appreciate your time and honesty in answering these questions. Hey folks, We seemed to decide the list is happy with a few appropriate job posts. My new employer is hiring, and I'm excited about working here, so I thought I'd share this with the list: Rangespan is a six month old Python-oriented startup, currently around ten people, based in Paddington Station, London. In my first two weeks here I've been impressed by the high standards of quality and the company's vaulting ambition. We provide high-scale e-commerce technology to create a revolutionary marketplace between major online retailers, and a vast network of suppliers, transacting across millions of products daily. Development has progressed enough to start deploying and demonstrating the reality of this vision, but is still early enough that all of us have a substantial effect on the future of the company. We're looking for developers at a variety of levels, with strong computer science backgrounds, and either stellar academic record or proven industry experience. We'd like to see the sort of high profile that comes with expertise and a pro-active attitude: Python core contributors, conference speakers, open source contributors & project leaders, thoughtful agile evangelists, and scalability experts. We'll need a data scientist, too. The sort of experience we're looking for includes: * Highly fluent in Python, experienced with Django, Amazon Web Services, MySQL and MongoDB. * Ability to contribute to an Agile environment, introducing new practices, refining our process, being strong on testing and TDD. * Expertise in architecting, coding & deploying RESTful web services & web applications. * Automated deployments to EC2. * Provisioning new hardware and debugging live code. * Ability to attract additional world-class software developers. * BS, MS or PhD degree in Computer Science or equivalent field. The founders are ex-Amazon executives and engineers, and bring a wealth of commercial and operational expertise. While the atmosphere is informal and affable, the technical team is intimidatingly proficient. We don't use recruiters, because they don't match up to the quality of candidates we insist upon. To quote one of our founders "It's critical to the success of our business to create the highest quality engineering team possible." Sorry I can't be specific about salary but it would vary widely depending on the applicant's experience. Suffice to say my personal offer was highly competitive for any industry outside of the city banks, plus for senior roles there would be equity involved, which I judged to be really attractive. I recently subscribed to this mailing list and I thought it would be nice to introduce myself. I'm moving to London next august and, since here in Argentina we also have a Python mailing list and a very active python community (in which I try to be relatively active), I wanted to submerge in the UK Python Community.
