The UK's official Python conference returns. It is aimed at everyone in the Python community, of all skill levels, from beginners to core developers. The conference will be held on the 24th to 25th September 2011, in the TechnoCentre Coventry (CV1 2TT). The conference is not-for-profit and community-run by volunteers. It is your conference so you can give a talk, lead a workshop or help with publicity - see our wiki for more details. In particular, it would help a lot if you can forward this announcement to your Python-using friends and colleagues and relevant mailing lists, or link to our website on Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and so on. Booking is open now. The ticket cost for the weekend is £95 which includes access to all sessions, lunches, refreshments, the exclusive PyCon UK T-shirt and the unmissable conference dinner (Concession rate is £75). Announcing the next London Python Code Dojo - 8th September 2011

Hi Folks, The subject says it all. Please note, the dojo is on the *8th* of September (not the 1st) which is contrary to the usual first Thursday of the month scheme that we usually have. It's in the usual place (Fry-IT's offices). Details and sign up form can be found here: https://ldnpydojo.eventwax.com/london-python-code-dojo-season-3-episode-1 Free pizza and beer starts at 6:30pm, coding at 7:30ish (or earlier if there's a feeding frenzy). Many thanks to Fry-IT for their continued support. There are only 30 tickets and they sell out quick so get a move on! :-) We’ll be doing some group based coding. This will involve brainstorming ideas during the pizza/beer part of the evening followed by a vote on which problem to solve and then a couple of hours of furious coding. To wrap the evening up we do a “show and tell” followed by drinks in the pub. As mentioned at the end of the last meeting, we'll be asking for volunteers to flap-about-at-the-front/run individual "episodes" to make sure the running and organisation of the dojo isn't just down to me (ntoll) and Bruce (otfrom). In case you're interested, it *isn't* that much work and is actually a lot of fun. See you there! Nicholas.

=========================================================== West Yorkshire Python User Group Meeting - Thurs. 11 Aug. =========================================================== About the meeting ================= We'll be arriving at Old Broadcasting House from about 6:30 onwards for coffee and vaguely Python related chat. At 7:30 there is a talk, which is expected to last for about half an hour. After that we will head to a pub for more geeky chat. The meetings are always good fun, and everyone of any level of experience or interest in Python is extremely welcome. Bring a friend! Talk: "Block World" - Simon Davy -------------------------------- Python and Ruby both are expressive, high level languages with many advanced features. Most differences between them are syntactic rather than semantic. However one feature that Ruby has and Python lacks are "blocks", and they are often touted as as one the best features of Ruby the language. In this talk, I'm going to introduce the Ruby block feature, which is very useful but actually has some quite interesting semantics - they're more than just anonymous functions. We'll look at the use cases for blocks, and look at the idiomatic python solutions for those use cases, where they exist. We'll finish of with a discussion of whether blocks (as implemented in Ruby) would be a useful addition to Python. Experience Level: The talk should be suitable to anyone who knows a bit about Python or Ruby. Good afternoon Pythoneers My client is seeking a Python Web Developer 1X Perm Dev up to £45K DOE and 2X Contract Devs £ Market Rates This is your chance to work in house for a global media Production Company based in London’s West End. You will be working on exciting Django, CSS/XHTML and JQuery code base architecture, technical development and scaling challenges including extending a brand new API and backend to power clients across Europe and soon the rest of the world, as well as investigating Mobile and other emerging platforms. What you will be doing: - Take a key role in future development of our Django, CSS/XHTML and JQuery code base - Work with our existing technical team to architect the next phase of our systems, including extending our API and working with new technologies - Maintain and add functionality to our existing sites, in particular handle requests for new functionality. There are lots of fun things we want to add to the new service What you need to have a strong knowledge of: - Fluency in Python 2.5+ and experience of building or contributing to large Django web applications - A good understanding of RESTful web services and, ideally, experience of developing/extending a REST API - Experience of, or an interest in, real-time push/long-polling technologies, such as node.js and Websockets - Experience of, or an interest in, working on high-availability and highly scalable systems - Experience of test-driven development, or at a minimum significant use of unit testing - Familiarity with Django pluggable apps (e.g. Django-registration, Django-proﬁles, Django- notifications and Django-paypal).
