Hi all, The next Southampton Python User Group talk will take place next Thursday evening. This will be a bit more hands on than our previous talks, so it's best to bring a laptop if possible. Continuous Integration with CircleCI Date: 6 p.m. 4th August 2016 Venue: Nuffield Theatre Room 1083 (6/1083), University of Southampton http://maps.southampton.ac.uk/ Speaker: Ryan Pepper, Alvaro Perez-Diaz, Uni of Soton As usual, refreshments will be provided before the talk, and everyone is welcome to join us in the pub afterwards. There will also be a chance to give brief lightning talks - perhaps about other tools for testing code. If there's something you'd like to tell people about, let me know! ---- Continuous integration (CI) is an integral part of modern software development. It is very useful to check that changes have not broken features in software in an unexpected way, and it would be very rare to find software developers based in companies not using at least some form of regular testing to ensure that regression does not occur. Major scientific software projects such as Numpy, Scipy and Jupyter are good examples of how to use CI in practice. In this talk, we'll give a brief introduction to continuous integration, how it can be used in scientific software development, and demonstrate how to set up CircleCI to automatically test an open source project which is written in Python and stored on GitHub. Bring a laptop with you if possible, to get the most out of the talk.

For your use in encouraging Python-converts: Introduction to Computer Science and Programming Using Python Starts on August 30, 2016 A new and updated introduction to computer science as a tool to solve real-world analytical problems using Python 3.5 About this course This course is the first of a two-course sequence: Introduction to Computer Science and Programming Using Python, and Introduction to Computational Thinking and Data Science. Together, they are designed to help people with no prior exposure to computer science or programming learn to think computationally and write programs to tackle useful problems. Some of the people taking the two courses will use them as a stepping stone to more advanced computer science courses, but for many it will be their first and last computer science courses. This run features updated lecture videos, lecture exercises, and problem sets to use the new version of Python 3.5. Even if you took the course with Python 2.7, you will be able to easily transition to Python 3.5 in future courses, or enroll now to refresh your learning. Since these courses may be the only formal computer science courses many of the students take, we have chosen to focus on breadth rather than depth. The goal is to provide students with a brief introduction to many topics so they will have an idea of what is possible when they need to think about how to use computation to accomplish some goal later in their career. That said, they are not "computation appreciation" courses. They are challenging and rigorous courses in which the students spend a lot of time and effort learning to bend the computer to their will. What programming language(s) will this course use? 6.00x will be using the Python programming language, version 3.5. You are not expected to have any prior programming knowledge - this course is intended for students who have little to no experience with any programming language. What is the format of the class? The class will consist of lecture videos, which are broken into small chunks, usually between eight and twelve minutes each. Some of these may contain integrated "check-yourself" questions. There will also be programming assignments and standalone exams/quizzes, which are not part of the video lectures. Will the text of the lectures be available? Yes, transcripts of the course will be made available. Do I need to watch the lectures live? No. You can watch the lectures at your leisure - you do not need to watch the lectures at any set time. How much does it cost to take the course? Nothing: the course is free. The next meeting of the Cambridge Python User Group will be on Tuesday 2nd August at 7pm Note that this meeting will be in Room LR4 (on the ground floor) of the Department of Engineering Charlotte [http://charlottegodley.co.uk] will be talking about her Music library project [http://github.com/Godley/Music-Library], a multi platform app she wrote for her final year project as part of her BSc Computer Science degree last year. The app is intended to be an open and extendible platform for organising sheet music (the notation for classical music given to players in an orchestra or similar), a problem which hasn't really been solved by other software even though there's plenty of software which can help you compose new music. Charlotte will talk about reasons she thinks the problem hasn't been addressed, problems she had working with music formats, including some thoughts on how we think about and perceive sheet music and Optical Music Recognition, particular issues technically with Python and forcing a single codebase to work on Windows, OSX and GNU/Linux, and how the app turned out in the end. Rob has been a member of the Python community in the UK for a very long time, and is a regular at PyCon UK. When John Pinner was ill, Rob organised a card-signing for John at PyCon UK, and I would like us to do the same for Rob. That's really kind of you to message Rob, especially regarding the massages! He was excited to raise money for the Python Foundation doing the massages, and encouraging others to do them too. I'm so glad Harry organized some massage this year! Rob is currently in hospital. He was diagnosed with a Glioblastoma Multiforme, essentially brain tumours, inoperable, quickly fatal, and rather a shock to us all. The diagnosis was further complicated by a major bleed from the tumours, resulting in a massive stroke. Rob can't move his right side at all, and has problems swallowing, and has until this week only been able to communicate by grunting. At last he is beginning to make words, but any concentrated effort wears him out very quickly- but it is wonderful to hear him speaking a little again. We are getting a room ready at home for him to return to, with hospital bed, hoist, wheelchair, and carers. He is desperate to come home, and we all want to spend his last few weeks with him here. Please do pass this news within the Python community as you need to. Thanks again for sending your message! Hope you enjoyed EuroPython. I came with Rob to Florence when it was held there, and had a wonderful time visiting the sights, and then took Rob to the Boboli Gardens when the conference ended and he had a couple of days of holiday before we flew home. Volunteers wanted for an academic project

Thank you for the email, Nicholas and Ed. The project involves text mining a large OCR'd text of historical records on public health of 19th century London. I already have a set of words I'd like to extract that are related to smell. I'd then like to geo reference these words in order to visualise the data. I have already attended a week long python and natural language processing workshop. From this I have some of the code and workflow drafted for the project. I think the input required is approximately one week's worth. The first phase of the project is due by the end of August. We're a new tech-focussed energy supplier for the UK, based in London with around 25 staff (7 in the engineering team). We're building a modern, event-driven infrastructure for interacting with both consumers (via the web, mobile apps and smart-meters) and the industry (eg data flows, consumption forecasting, trading on the wholesale market). We use Python heavily: our consumer-facing site is powered by Django and the Django-REST-framework amongst other things - we also use Pandas, Numpy and Jupyter for analysis and forecasting. We also use React and React-native for client-side and mobile development. We use AWS heavily, employing most of the Hashistack (Vagrant, Packer, Consul, Terraform) in some form. We use Kanban and employ CircleCI and Atlas to coordinate a continuous deployment pipeline.
