PhD student looking to be more involved in the scikit-image community
Hi all, my name is Gus and I'm a Materials Science PhD student. Most of my research involves x-radiography, so I've done a lot of image processing over the last few years that eventually brought me to Python and scikit-image. After using Python/scikit-image/Git consistently for a couple years, I think I'm finally at the point where I can be helpful to the community. I've read through the "how to contribute" page, and I'm interested in mentoring as suggested there. Overall I feel pretty good about the outlined contribution process, but I could use some additional guidance on using GitLab/pooch and the testing process. I've started looking through the issues tagged "good first issue" on GitHub, so talking through what might be a good first issue for me to tackle would also be helpful! I'm sure the community is generally very busy, but if anybody has the bandwidth for this kind of light mentoring, I'd be grateful and would love to chat with you! Thanks! Gus
Hi Gus, Thank you for your interest! If you are available this Monday afternoon (Paris time), I could jump on a quick call with you to discuss possible starting points. Speaking of Materials Science, I was recently contacted by the ImageXD 2021 Program Committee: ImageXD 2021 is a 2-day virtual conference organized by BIDS (Berkeley Institute of Data Science); it will take place on May 17--18 (Monday--Tuesday). If there is still time, we might be able to put together a small talk for the Materials Science session... Even if there isn't, we could work together on a tutorial (https://scikit-image.org/docs/stable/auto_examples/#longer-examples-and-demo...) showcasing an application in Materials Science. I would be happy to discuss this possibility as well! Looking forward to hearing from you, Marianne, for the core team On Fri, Apr 9, 2021 at 11:34 PM Gus Becker <cgusbecker@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi Marianne, Thank you so much for the response! I'd be happy to get on a quick call on Monday. I have a meeting at 4 pm your time, so maybe we can find a time before then? I'm interested in that conference! I can share with you how I've been using the library and we can discuss putting together a talk. I've been working with my research center to organize some workshops showcasing data processing with Python, so I'm also comfortable putting together some tutorials! My meeting on Monday is with my advisors, so if you think it would be useful, I can also talk with them about making some example data available... Thanks again! Hi all, fyi I have scheduled a conference call with Gus.
I could use some additional guidance on using GitLab/pooch
I'll move https://github.com/scikit-image/scikit-image/issues/5277 to the top of my pile ;-) We'll continue the conversation in private and via GitHub pull requests! Cheers, Marianne On Sat, Apr 10, 2021 at 9:41 PM Gus Becker <cgusbecker@gmail.com> wrote:
