Cython is very widely used and is improving rapidly. The Cython developers added functionality similar to weave.inline last December: http://wiki.cython.org/enhancements/inline
Thank you. I have taken a look at Cython and yes, it's pretty much what I was looking for API-wise – though performance still falls short of my requirements.
