For the confluent hypergeometric function specifically (on which I've worked unsuccessfully), the main difficulty is that no known algorithm (https://arxiv.org/abs/1407.7786) is reliable throughout parameter space, and in fact finding any combination of algorithms that works well is rather hard.
I have more specific results tucked away somewhere, including interesting plots (one attached as an example---number of correct digits computed by the optimally-truncated asymptotic series as a function of the parameters).
