Development wise, I can't see how this would be too difficult. You would have to merge iPython with matplotlib and a wysiwyg editor. I think the biggest hurdle would be choosing a gui kit, since no one kit makes everybody happy.
It's not fundamentally difficult, but it is a lot of work. However, it is something that I've personally wanted for a very long time (anyone interested will find such references in the ipython lists from way back). One of the main reasons behind the recently mentioned freeze on ipyhton development is precisely this: I need to clean up the ipython internals in a pretty serious way before this kind of integration is possible. The short story is: something like this will probably happen, because John and I (mostly me, in this particular case) are very interested in making it happen. But it will be a slow process; if you (any you, not necessarily the OP) want it faster, roll up your sleeves and come over to the ipython-dev list, where I can give you plenty of work to do :) Best, f
