Hello everyone, Are we willing to participate in GSoC this year? Last year I had a good student and we were able to make good progress. I’d be thrilled to apply again. Is there anyone else who would be benefited by this? Best regards, Hameer Abbasi

Thanks for asking Hameer! If we apply again this year, I'd prefer for another maintainer to take over from me as the SciPy sub-org admin. It doesn't take that much time and I can do a handover - but my list of such admin responsibilities is long, so I'd prefer to hand over the baton. Cheers, Ralf
Hi all, I am personally against a participation for this year. Google is not sending a good message to open source at the moment, hence I am not comfortable supporting them. Cheers, Pamphile

Hi Ralf, all,
Assuming we are a sub-org of the PSF, I don’t mind taking over — I had experience with them as a sub-org admin once or twice already.
However, I wouldn’t want the overhead just for one project (else I can apply directly to the PSF), but I’d be happy to be a sub-org admin if we had at least one other prospective project.

Google hasn't been great about GSoC recently, but the organizations still get to decide who they're taking and why, so stepping back would cause more harm than good IMO. That said, I was happy with the work done on NumPy last year, and could propose a project within f2py this year as well if SciPy is participating.

Hi Hameer, A decision is still pending between SciPy maintainers, so we need to wait before doing anything. Cheers, Pamphile

Hello Rohit, all,
My perspective on this, in addition to what Rohit already said is that Google gets a bit of marketing out of it, and some goodwill. However it hardly gets a financial benefit, other than in the long term when it can use that software.
Rohit, should I take this as confirmation that you’d be willing to participate? In which case I can take over the sub-org role from Ralf, unless you’d be willing to do it.
I’m secretly hoping we get even more projects/students, but that’s dependent on the community.
