Pearu, I have tagged the CVS tree as "v0_2_0" Now, I'm not sure what to do about the auto-cvs-version business as well as the release_level flag. Do, we make source-distributions and binary rpms that have those bits on them as well? I think SciPy-0.2.0.tar.gz would be a better file name than what it currently is using sdist command of distutils. What do you think? I'd like to start distributing the files and place announcements out. I tried testing this on Windows but my Windows 98 under WinLin kept bombing out during compilation (something about an illegal instruction under and MS DOS prompt). If someone can test the Windows build that would be great. -Travis

I agree with you, SciPy-0.2.0.tar.gz looks better, also people who will package scipy will be happier. Hmm, we could start the following convention: when the minor version number is odd, then this corresponds to CVS version of scipy. If it is even, then to tar-ball version of scipy. So, scipy_version.py should contain: if micro % 2: scipy_version = '%(major)d.%(minor)d.%(micro)d_%(release_level)s'\ '_%(cvs_minor)d.%(cvs_serial)d' % (locals ()) else: scipy_version = '%(major)d.%(minor)d.%(micro)d' % (locals ()) Pearu

While doing this, could you keep a record on your commands so that a 'How to release Scipy' section could be added to Scipy developer docs. Thanks, Pearu
Hey Travis, Very cool. I will do this tomorrow, late morning. eric Travis Oliphant wrote:

Eric, Could you explain what is going on with these .py files? It looks like distutils tries to compile everything with a *.py extension but these files won't compile because of some stuff at the front of the file. For example, the error shows up during RPM building right now as RPM build errors: File not found: /var/tmp/SciPy-buildroot/usr/lib/python2.2/site-packages/kiva/agg/graphics_context.pyc File not found: /var/tmp/SciPy-buildroot/usr/lib/python2.2/site-packages/kiva/agg/graphics_context.swig.pyc The files are probably not found due to compilation issues earlier: byte-compiling /usr/local/lib/python2.3/site-packages/kiva/agg/graphics_context.py to graphics_context.pyc File "/usr/local/lib/python2.3/site-packages/kiva/agg/graphics_context.py", line 1 %pythoncode { ^ SyntaxError: invalid syntax byte-compiling /usr/local/lib/python2.3/site-packages/kiva/agg/graphics_context.swig.py to graphics_context.swig.pyc File "/usr/local/lib/python2.3/site-packages/kiva/agg/graphics_context.swig.py", line 1 %pythoncode { ^ SyntaxError: invalid syntax -Travis O.
