Hello, folks As part of the work to engage, support and onboard new contributors (and possibly, new maintainers in the future!), I'd like to propose monthly Newcomers Meetings. These are office-hours style meetings, where people can ask questions and talk about possible ways to contribute to SciPy. We have been doing this for a while at NumPy, and matplotlib is also setting these up for the near future. These are of course optional for maintainers, although it would be nice to have at least one maintainer every time to guide new contributors if there are specific questions. I have created a poll to check for possible times for the first one. We can certainly also use the same idea that we do for the community meetings, alternating timezones so more people can join. Please respond here with your availability if you are interested in participating, even occasionally: https://www.when2meet.com/?15568665-BaWJI For more context, you can see here a few examples of past meetings from the NumPy community: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLCK6zCrcN3GVoYEhrn3pS8wUxifnMax5Q Let me know if you have questions or suggestions. Cheers! Melissa

A Great addition. Numpy's newcomers always welcomes anyone who wants to ask questions and we usually see a large amount of attendance in those meetings. Great to have it in Scipy as well Regards, Bhavuk Kalra On Wed, 4 May, 2022, 8:46 pm Melissa Mendonça, <melissawm@gmail.com> wrote:

Hello, folks! There were not that many responses to the poll I sent for the newcomer meetings (https://www.when2meet.com/?15568665-BaWJI) so I propose we try to start with *Friday May 27 at 7pm UTC.* Depending on other folks' availability and interest, we can organize alternating times and find a way to reach more people. We can discuss it at the meeting itself or the next community meetings. In addition to the newcomer meeting, I'd like to propose a discussion on a secondary communication channel. This won't replace the mailing list, but might serve as a tool for quick communication and allow newcomers to work together when they have questions or need help. I have no explicit preference for a tool, and I know we already have a gitter space ( https://gitter.im/scipy/scipy) so I would be happy to continue using that. We could also use slack (which is what NumPy does - and a few SciPy contributors are already at the NumPy slack space) or discord. To clarify: *this is not for user questions*, but rather for contributors and maintainers, if they wish to join. If you have a preference, please vote here *by Friday May 27*: https://forms.gle/ysnhASSBmSzCtGKq7 Thanks and feel free to reach out if you have questions or ideas. Cheers! - Melissa
