The New Scipy Central Home page
Hey, As discussed before, I want to start my first contribution to SciPy by make Scipy Central new design. So, my idea is to make the site look "clean and simple". However, lots of things needed to be done, I just want to share this small piece. http://ksurya.github.com/scipycentral/ The whole point of sharing at this early is that I need some suggestions regarding some major design-changes in the code. 1. Remove "Tag cloud" from its current position and place on the background of "Heading: Scipy Central" 2. Submit Code, Submit Lib files, Submit Link.. part, I don't want to comment on it now. May be we don't need to change but can change some design! However, we can as well put them on on nav-bar Fundamentally, I want to hear some suggestions regarding these things.. Hope you like the page. Also, What about the "color". Is black okay? How about regular "scipy blue"? Not sure? Need some suggestion on it?

Hi Surya, there was a logo designed and discussed at some point, it's here: https://github.com/tonysyu/SciPy-Central-Logo I personally like the "scipy blue". It's more friendly than black. Cheers, Andreas.
That's really awesome. I updated the link. Please check out! On Wed, Jan 30, 2013 at 9:09 PM, Andreas Hilboll <lists@hilboll.de> wrote:

I think the convention on this list is to bottom-post. Well, so far it doesn't look like finished. I guess everyone is waiting for you to just continue, and basically show some more final result. If you ask me, I would want categories and/or tags on the front page, and the recently updated / most viewed / top contributors could go into a side panel. Also there should be some slogan / text telling the visitor on which kind of website she is. Like it is now, I wouldn't know where I am and leave again. Also, I personally don't like the black in combination with the quite light blue of the logo. This is just my 2 cents. As someone said earlier, I think the best way for you is to just proceed and ask the list about your results, not about any single step you want to take. Just go ahead :) Cheers, Andreas.

I quite like how the new design looks visually. Putting less different things on it than on the current scipy-central site makes sense, especially the tag cloud and list of contributors don't add much. I would put the name "SciPy Central" somewhere though (on the black bar or in/next to the logo?). Having one list of direct links to contributions that are ranked highest (as determined by a combination of recent activity and popularity?) under the search would be good imho. Cheers, Ralf

The popularity measure is however probably only useful if search engine robots are not counted. I think at present there is no differentiation between bone-and-flesh and mechanical visitors. It seems likely there is an existing Django plugin that does this already. Pauli

Nice! I will continue my work. Will post new updates on the list (may take 2 weeks). Actually there are two home designs we can use 1. A clean simple home page with a search input.. of course, couple of links below search bar (ex: google.com) 2. A "modern" forum style page. We can have a search bar on the center-top while, the rest of the page is neatly occupied with latest/ new updates. We can put "tags" on the right side. I guess this should be developer friendly! Stackexchange sites are a good example. Also, http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums should be a nice example.. (The above links have inspired me. we can actually understand what kind of design suites well) Actually, I am unable to decide which one to choose. So, was asking on the forum. May be you guys can might already have something in mind.

to clarify: google doesn't know how to present structured data what are the most popular (by downloads) packages on the fileexchange that use the statistics toolbox? http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/index?sort=downloads_desc&term=+product%3A%22Statistics+Toolbox%22 and you can check their sort-by that I'm missing mostly with google (an administrator of google groups cannot even sort members by date. That was bugging me a few hours ago.) I like browsing every once in a while, and not just searching when I already know what the animal I look for is called. So I would prefer not to have just a big search button. Josef

+1. With google.com, everyone knows what the site is about. scipy-central.org should not assume that the users know what the site can do. So it must tell users what it can do. An "about" box, tags. Also searches. Categories? Your challenge, Surya, is to put all this on the homepage without making the site visually cluttered =) Cheers, Andreas.

I'm a big fan! Personally, I think the default bootstrap CSS is a bit overused, but I'm sure the color of the header bar could be changed very easily. As you continue to add more of the features/content from scipy-central.org, I think it will only get better! It'll be great to see this as it matures. -Robert

I think you have a pretty good idea, it make me think of MIT Media lab random Logo [1], But I think we can do better. Like this nice page does with an animated SVG : http://www.xn--ole-9la.net/eolienne-anim.html (éole.net with unicode characters for browser that support it) and inspired by http://bl.ocks.org/4282586 (d3 js : Three axis rotation, orthographic view ) I'm sure one could make the Scipy Logo animated. It would have the advantage of also making the resources cacheable, but we should, of course have a fallback on a renderd. I'll let you imagine what can be done with geolocalisation and time of the day. Lot's of good example here : http://bl.ocks.org/mbostock Cheers, -- Matthias [1] http://www.fastcodesign.com/1663378/mit-media-labs-brilliant-new-logo-has-40...

I think a reasonable workaround here would be to have two or so versions of the logo, and just choose between them randomly. -- Pauli Virtanen

I've updated the logo code <https://github.com/tonysyu/SciPy-Central-Logo>to use multiple globe orientations. The original had arrows pointing from specific cities into a central location, which made a lot sense for "Scipy Central". To allow multiple globe orientations, however, I changed the arrows so that they start from the edges of the globe; that way the start positions wouldn't be at random locations when the map was reoriented. It doesn't mesh quite as well with what I had in mind, but at least the arrows don't point into the North Atlantic Garbage Patch anymore. Also, I tweaked the element sizes so that it looked better at smaller scales (which was mentioned in a separate thread). The example focuses the arrows on a list of cities, but it could be made completely random if desired. I've copied a couple of orientations below (there aremore cities in the code, and more can be easily added). Cheers, -Tony [image: Inline image 1][image: Inline image 2] The one below may be closer to logo size. [image: Inline image 3]
