As part of an effort to make scipy work with numarray, I merged the numarray branch of CVS onto the main trunk about an hour ago. In theory, this has no effect on the operation of scipy using Numeric and will eventually enable operation based on numarray. As of today, the "numarray merge" mostly affects scipy_base so there are many updates that remain to be done to scipy as a whole before numarray is equally supported. Operation with Numeric is the default. To run using numarray, you "setenv NUMERIX numarray" and then start python and import scipy as usual. There is currently output on the console which indicates which array package you're getting at import time. There are still errors in the self-tests using numarray so this is mostly a curiosity announcement and head's up to be on the lookout for other problems. If you're curious, get numarray from CVS on source forge first. Regards, Todd
How about adding one more way to configure numerix: apart from checking the command line and the environment, one could also check a global variable 'numerix': if 'numerix' in globals().keys(): which = globals()['numerix'], 'global variable' That way, one could simply do a globals()['numerix'] = 'numarray' from scipy import * at the beginning of a script without worrying about the environment. It looks like the installation of scipy was not completely succesful. Please, check scipy installation messages for any errors. Also, what is the output of python system_info.py when executed in scipy_distutils directory? Pearu

Could you be a more specific on where exactly scipy test crashes? For example, try scipy.test(verbosity=10) If scipy.test dies while testing scipy.linalg or scipy.lib.lapack then what compiler version are you using? If its pre gcc 3.3.3 then note that lapack library (that are used for completing atlas lapack) must be compiled with -O2 (not with -O3) flag due to a compiler bug. Pearu

Here are the last few lines of that output: check_basic (scipy_base.index_tricks.test_index_tricks.test_grid) ... ok check_nd (scipy_base.index_tricks.test_index_tricks.test_grid) ... ok check_gebal (scipy.lib.lapack.test_lapack.test_flapack_complex) ... ok check_heev (scipy.lib.lapack.test_lapack.test_flapack_complex)Segmentation fault

That certainly seems like must what be happening. However, I'm using gcc 3.4.2 on FC3. Just to be safe, anyway, I recompiled LAPACK with -O2 instead of -O3. No change in the above behavior.
Stephen Walton wrote:

This problem is now solved. I pulled a copy of LAPACK down from netlib a few days ago. this copy has, for some reason, a make.inc.LINUX file which includes the '-fno-f2c' switch to g77. I missed this when recompiling LAPACK. Why it is now included, I've no idea. With this fixed, and Numeric 23.6 or 23.7, scipy.test(level=1) passes everything.

Quoting me: There are still errors in the self-tests using numarray so this is mostly a curiosity announcement and head's up to be on the lookout for other problems. If you're curious, get numarray from CVS on source forge first. So: I didn't mean to imply that the numarray port of SciPy is finished, merely that the port of scipy_base to numarray has been moved to the head of CVS; scipy_base.test() does AFIK complete w/o errors. scipy.test() had ~70 errors the last time I looked and it will likely take at least a few weeks to straighten them out. Beyond that, major scipy facilities remain to be ported such as weave and scipy_distutils. Beyond that, some of the scipy functions need to be "re-wrapped" using the numarray UFunc API. Regards, Todd

The scipy_base port doesn't work with numarray-1.1.1. You need numarray CVS. Regards, Todd
