Help required regding Eigenvectors

Hello All, I have been encountering some strange problems with the calculation of eigen vectors using python. The problem is with the sign of the eigen vectors calculated. On Very few occasions the eigen vectors calculated using python have an opposite sign than the actual eigenvectors, though the magnitude is correct. Can any one of you plz help me in this regard and suggest me some solution if you have encoutered similar problems . Any help in this regd is appreciated Thanks in Advace regds Sudheer

about weave performance evaluation

Hi all, I'm not completely sure but it seems to me that there is an error in the performance evaluation of pure python, scipy, weave, fortran and C++ implementations of the laplace equation solver in http://www.scipy.org/documentation/weave/weaveperformance.html the code used to solve the laplace equation in pure python is: for i in range(1, nx-1): for j in range(1, ny-1): u[i,j] = ((u[i-1, j] + u[i+1, j])*dy**2 + (u[i, j-1] + u[i, j+1])*dx**2)/(2.0*(dx**2 + dy**2)) my guess is that this implementation overwrites u while running the loop. In other terms, when computing the term u[i,j], the terms u[i-1,j] and u[i,j-1] are used, and these terms where already modified in previous iterations. The same error is done in the weave.inline, fortran and C++ implementations, so as they are all computing the same wrong algorithm this may not be a problem when evaluation performances. However the scipy (or numeric) and weave.blitz implementation is: u[1:-1, 1:-1] = ((u[0:-2, 1:-1] + u[2:, 1:-1])*dy2 + (u[1:-1,0:-2] + u[1:-1, 2:])*dx2)*dnr_inv the previous error is not in this implementation so the code is not computing the same algorithm, and comparisons in the execution times would make no sense. Is my guess true? should the performances be reevaluated? thank you, pau

cholesky decomposition fails

small error problem

I have a script that uses row reduction to mind the null space of a matrix. I am experiencing some strange behavior. At the begining of the script, I have a 2x2 matrix, but it is of rank 1. (I realize that find the null space of a 2x2 could be much simpler, but I will generally have higher ranked matrices. I have also found the nullspace using svd, but have gotten the best results from rref in the past.) The fact that the matrix is rank one can be verified early in the script. Row 2 is a multiple of row 1: (Pdb) mat[1,1]/mat[1,0]-mat[0,1]/mat[0,0] Out[2]: NumPy array, format: long 0.0 (Pdb) '%0.30f'%(mat[1,1]/mat[1,0]-mat[0,1]/mat[0,0]) Out[2]: '0.000000000000000000000000000000' In order to do the row reduction, I append a column of zeros: (Pdb) vect Out[2]: NumPy array, format: long [[ 0.,] [ 0.,]] 15 -> mat=c_[mat,vect] (Pdb) mat Out[2]: NumPy array, format: long [[ 1.50155914,-1.24770975,] [-2.98977017, 2.48432803,]] But now there is some small error: (Pdb) '%0.30f'%(mat[1,1]/mat[1,0]-mat[0,1]/mat[0,0]) Out[2]: '-0.000000013035565737951060327759' (Pdb) mat[1,1]/mat[1,0]-mat[0,1]/mat[0,0] Out[2]: -1.303556573795106e-08 and the output is now a scalar instead of NumPy array, format: long Any ideas why this is happening? weave changes 0.3.2 -> 0.3.3

Hi, I got the latest scipy (old) from svn and tried to run the laplace.py example from the weave documentation. SciPy op Opteron install

Hi all, I am proud to say that I finally managed to do a complete install of svn scipy on our new cluster. I will briefly report on the install process, which is kind of tricky. I also have some remaining questions. The setup is the following: blas and lapack come with the AMD Core Math Library, which was installed on the system. Everything is 64bit. The preferred compiler is pathscale, but also gcc is available (3.4.4 and 3.4.0 -- I used 3.4.4 ). (All other pythonrelated stuff has been compiled with pathscale.) Building newcore works without any problems; newscipy is a bit messier, since I get an "Internal compiler error during WHIRL" (Nested functions not implemented...) on pathcc -fno-strict-aliasing -DNDEBUG -g -O3 -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -fPIC -Ibuild/src -I/data/home/u0038151/lib/python2.4/site-packages/scipy/base/include -I/apps/prod/python/2.4.1/include/python2.4 -c build/src/Lib/interpolate/dfitpackmodule.c -o build/temp.linux-x86_64-2.4/build/src/Lib/interpolate/dfitpackmodule.o I replaced pathcc by gcc; this succeeded and I continued the build. Then I got 8 fortran errors on the command pathf90 -Wall -fno-second-underscore -fPIC -O2 -funroll-loops -Ibuild/src -I/data/home/u0038151/lib/python2.4/site-packages/scipy/base/include -I/apps/prod/python/2.4.1/include/python2.4 -c -c build/src/Lib/sparse/sparsetools/spblas.f -o build/temp.linux-x86_64-2.4/build/src/Lib/sparse/sparsetools/spblas.o I got past this by replacing pathf90 by g77. Then the build succeeded. array like circular buffer?

I would like to have a fixed size array like data structure that has circular buffer semantics. Eg, when empty you can call a "put" method that starts in the beginning and fills the sucker up, and when you overflow the end it starts pushing the data from the 0 index off the stack -- FIFO. Ideally, it would support slicing and friends. Is there such a beast, or something close? Thanks, JDH
