can't import scipy.sparse.linalg

Hi all. I just built the latest svn version and installed. I can import, e.g. scipy.sparse.sparsetools, but cannot import scipy.sparse.linalg. No obvious error messages during the build. Anyone else have this problem? Looks like there was some reasonably heavy developer activity in this directory last week. Tester import errors

importing pylab??

pyloess in scipy?

I'm looking to update scipy to something closer to the trunk and I've discovered that the pyloess.py package under sandbox is missing. Searching the mailing list gives me an impression that many modules are now moved to scikits. Can somebody point me to where this package is after the refactoring? Thanks, Will

I'd like to make a python/numpy/scipy equivalent of the MATLAB quick reference: http://www.math.umd.edu/~jeo/matlab_quickref.pdf I think that this could be an improvement upon: http://mathesaurus.sourceforge.net/matlab-python-xref.pdf and go a long ways in putting newcomers on their feet. Any thoughts or advice? Ben R.

Pickling Large (Image) Arrays

Hi All, I'm doing some image processing on some rather large images (2000x2000 pixels and each pixel has 16 bits) so the file comes in at 7-8 MB. During the image processing I convert the image to a 64-bit float numpy array and do a bunch of operations on the image. In certain cases (where tests fail), I'd like to save all the data to a file to take a look at later and debug. I need to keep the size of this file as small as possible. I'm thinking of writing some code that will round pixel values to an 8-bit unsigned integer and then pickle the data to a file. Is this the a good approach? Can anyone suggest a better approach? Will this actually succeed in reducing the file size, or will I just be wasting my time? Thanks, Keith

reading character arrays from fortran file

I'm trying to read a character array from a binary fortran file and the following code seems to work: from scipy.io import fopen fd1 = fopen.fopen('fort', permission='rb', format='n') print fd1.fort_read(0, dtype='str') But then I get this deprecation warning saying that I should use npfile instead of fopen. Unfortunately, I don't get npfile to do the same as the code above. I tried the following which does not work: from scipy.io import npfile fd2 = npfile('fort') print fd2.read_array(dt='str', shape=-1) What's the correct way to do it with npfile? Ciao Andreas
