Thanks, Eric. However, I'm already using Numeric-21.0 As an experiment, I installed python2.1.3 and then Numeric-21.0. So far so good: [root@localhost Numeric-21.0]# python2.1 Python 2.1.3 (#2, May 1 2002, 16:09:35) [GCC 2.96 20000731 (Red Hat Linux 7.1 2.96-98)] on linux2 Type "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
import Numeric
Then I installed SciPy-0.1. Now, when I try to import Numeric, I get: [root@localhost SciPy-0.1]# python2.1 Python 2.1.3 (#2, May 1 2002, 16:09:35) [GCC 2.96 20000731 (Red Hat Linux 7.1 2.96-98)] on linux2 Type "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
import Numeric Traceback (most recent call last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in ? File "/usr/local/lib/python2.1/site-packages/Numeric/Numeric.p arrayrange = multiarray.arange AttributeError: 'multiarray' module has no attribute 'arange'
Apparently, the SciPy install is doing something to my Numeric module. Does anyone know what is going on here? Craig Stoudt Annandale, VA __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Health - your guide to health and wellness http://health.yahoo.com

Where did SciPy come from -- source? RPM? IIRC, the debian package of a couple of months ago for scipy would overwrite bits of Numeric. Did you check to see whether Numeric has changed after installing scipy? -S -- by Rocket to the Moon, by Airplane to the Rocket, by Taxi to the Airport, by Frontdoor to the Taxi, by throwing back the blanket and laying down the legs ... - They Might Be Giants
Hey Craig,
Thanks, Eric. However, I'm already using Numeric-21.0 <snip> Then I installed SciPy-0.1. Now, when I try to import
Ah. I've been using the CVS version so long, I didn't even think about 0.1. :-| This explains it. SciPy-0.1 does overwrite some of Numeric -- and with a much older version than you are using. I expect you have some sort of mixture of the old and the new in Numeric, and they don't play well together. I think there are two possibilities. If you want to stick with the 0.1 release, I would first remove the Numeric directory from site-packages. *Do not* reinstall Numeric-21.0. Reinstall SciPy 0.1. SciPy will install an old version of Numeric, but this will hopefully fix your problem. The other alternative is to try your hand at installing the (forever) upcoming 0.2 release from the nightly CVS snapshot. It has many improvements and is probably more stable than 0.1. It will take more effort to install though because it depends on several other packages. Some notes on installation are here: http://www.scipy.net/pipermail/scipy-user/2002-April/000269.html I'd recommend trying 0.2 if you have the time to build it. I think you'll be happier with the package. good luck, eric
