The next time I upgrade Ubuntu or update numpy, I will try just using the stock version. Numpy is actually running fine right now and I don't want to mess with it. But something about my configuration confuses the SfePy Makefile.

Which linux distribution are you running? If Debian/Ubuntu, why don't you just install it from Debian? I do that and it works great.
