thank you for your interest, any kind of contribution is very welcome! Some info on how/what to contribute can be found at [1], open issues are at [2]. There is not much of suitable issues for new contributors now, but that does not mean there is nothing to do.
To get acquainted with sfepy, you can start by reading the tutorial [3] and primer [4] sections of the documentation and trying out the examples that come with the sources. Your first contribution could be pinpointing anything that is not clear in the docs. :)
