In VTK files, SfePy uses the point data called "node_groups" for denoting vertex groups, and the cell data called "mat_id" for denoting cell (volume element) groups. Check any VTK results file generated by SfePy (e.g. by running most of the examples). You can easily display the vertex and cell groups in a VTK file by using postproc.py with the --all option.
I will see if I can write a little program to add the face/facets information from the *.face file into the VTK file.
Yes, that should be possible. Another possibility would be to enhance the sfepy reader for tetgen files to use the available information in the .node, .ele files.
