Actually, after initial training, the SpamBayes only trains on its 'mistakes'... Messages that you highlight an click "delete as spam" or "recover from spam". It also trains when you move a message into your spam folder by drag-and-drop, or move a message out of your spam folder. SpamBayes does *not* train on all incoming spam and ham. You need both spam and ham for training, not just spam. The simplest option will be for you to have two separately trained instances of Spambayes on each machine... This will work fairly well, but if you use one machine a lot more than the other, the effectiveness of one machine might be less. If you want to avoid this issue, you need to copy your spam DB files around like I suggested earlier. As for keeping spam around, you don't need to do that if you regulary back up your SpamBayes DB files. That way if the SpamBayes DB files get corrupted, you can restore from backup rather than rebuilding from the source email messages. Help configuring Outlook Express

Hi - I can't figure out how to configure Spambayes to work with Outlook Express on a Windows 2000 system - the documentation for this aspect is totally confusing. I managed to run the "python setup.py install" command ok, and went to the Python "lib" directory and moved the "email" library to "email_old". But them I'm totall stumped at running the command "python scripts\sb_server.py -b" because it crashes with a winsock error. I know there's no automatic install script for Outlook Express - only for Outlook - but can someone tell me a simple list of the essential steps I need to get this thing working - I'm really interested to try it!! I did not write down the DLL message, but I have done a full re-boot. I also noticed something interesting yesterday -- SpamBayes works fine when I am remote (i.e. not at the office). I use a VPN over DSL to connect to Exchange when I am remote, and everything is fine. When I am in the office and connected directly to the LAN, SpamBayes does not do anything. I am thinking that mail is treated differently when I am directly on the LAN, perhaps mail is not really downloaded to my laptop but is instead only "viewed" by my laptop. Does anyone know what is different between the remote and local Exchange? If you're using the Outlook plugin, first set up and train on both machines independently. Then, if you want to use updates, just copy your c:\documents ands settings\username\application data\spambayes\*.DB files from the desktop machine to the same location on the laptop, overwriting the DB files on the laptop. So long as SpamBayes is closed when you do this, it won't know the difference, and will use the "updated" DB from your desktop. I actually wrote a batch file that synchronizes the DB files on each machine, copying the newest DB files to both machines. It then launches Outlook, and waits for you to close outlook, then re-syncs the DB files. It works well over my VPN connection form home, and does nothing when the VPN is down. Regards, -Ryan-

Messages get identified but not moved to Junk

The spam stays in my inbox and gets marked as 'read' but not moved to inbox. If I choose to see the spam probability is shows 100%. Outlook xp, winxp.

Replying mails

Hi anti-spammies =) I am planning the use the SMTÅP-server. However there is one thing that makes me concerned. Let's say I am sending a reply and my message is trained as ham automagically - will the quoted text in the replied message be trained aswell? In that case it's not good, because I am training all my incoming messages thrue the web based interface. Another thing, not at all that important but still...if it's like that that SpamBayes ignores the quoted message it must be doing it by looking at the ">"-signs at the beginning of each row. Some people are using other signs than ">" so this should be configurable. Depending on your answer I will probably add this as a feature request later on =) I am thrilled to have found SpamBayes. I find it fascinating to work so well. I almost have none erroneous classified messages anymore. Thanks for a great app! Regards, Jens Rantil, Sweden

It doesn't train all your outgoing messages as ham - in fact, it leaves almost all of your messages alone. What it does is intercept mail to two special (configurable) addresses, and trains any messages to those as either spam or ham (depending on the address) - and *does not* deliver those. Ideally, you need to send it either exact copies of the messages that you receive (most mailers will not do this), or forward messages with the spambayes id of the message (which is included by default, if your mailer forwards *all* the original message's headers), so that spambayes can lookup the message in the cache, and train it from there. It's a substitute/complement to the web training interface, not something different for outgoing mail. =Tony Meyer
