Building Outlook Plug-in From Source - Something Missing?

I have been trying to build SpamBayes OL2K plugin from source by running in Outlook2000/installer/crank.py. I had to hard-code the directory in, and get the latest CVS copy of spambayes_addin.spec (not included in the source distrib). The script runs build.py OK, builds a spambayes_addin.dll, but then coughs on looking for gencache.dat. It looks like there needs to be a Outlook2000/installer/dist/support/gen_py directory when I'm done, but there is none there. Everything else under dist looks fine - /images, /doc, and all the python DLL's and so forth are there. Looking over everything, it seems that makepy must generate COM object wrappers that go here, but this is not being done. Vitals: WinXP, Python 2.2.3, McMillan Installer 5b5_5, win32all-156, Outlook 2000 installed on the build box.

Please help - mysterious problem

We've used SpamBayes for several months on 2 Windows XP (with Outlook XP) machines with no problems - it's a terrific product and we plan to deploy it for many of our 100+ users throughout the college. Last week we installed it on a Windows 2K (with Outlook XP) machine, and it seemed to be working fine. But when the user logged off and logged back in (he had Outlook in his startup folder so it loaded automatically on login), Outlook froze and an error message popped up saying that SpamBayes had caused a fatal error. The error asked if the user wanted to deactivate SpamBayes so Outlook could load, and he selected yes. Outlook loaded fine, but the SpamBayes buttons were gone from the toolbar. The user then called me for help. A description of what I tried is listed below. In each case, "FAILED" means the Object Libraries didn't load upon the first opening of Outlook after installing SpamBayes, and the SpamBayes buttons didn't show up on the Outlook toolbar. 1. Followed your suggestions in troubleshooting.html for resetting Outlook's toolbars and checking the logs. The logs contained no errors, and resetting the toolbars didn't bring the SpamBayes buttons back; Result: FAILED 2. Un-installed SpamBayes from the control panel; rebooted; re-installed SpamBayes; Opened Outlook; Result: FAILED 3. Un-installed SpamBayes and Outlook XP from the control panel; rebooted; re-installed Outlook XP (+ updates); re-installed SpamBayes; Opened Outlook; Result: FAILED 4. Un-installed SpamBayes and Outlook XP from the control panel; deleted all SpamBayes entries in the registry; rebooted; re-installed Outlook XP (+ updates); re-installed SpamBayes; Opened Outlook; Result: FAILED 5. Un-installed SpamBayes and Office XP from the control panel; deleted all SpamBayes entries in the registry; rebooted; re-installed Office XP (+ updates); re-installed SpamBayes; Opened Outlook; Result: FAILED 6. Un-installed SpamBayes and Office XP from the control panel; deleted all SpamBayes entries in the registry; Re-installed Windows 2000 Service Pack 4; rebooted; re-installed Office XP (+ updates); re-installed SpamBayes; Opened Outlook; Result: FAILED Each time SpamBayes was re-installed, the SpamBayes folder was put in C:/Program Files, and SpamBayes showed up in the Control Panel. But for some reason it will not load up with Outlook no matter what we do. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Brandon M. My bitmaps

I made two bitmaps for Delete As Spam and Recover From Spam. One is a red X and the other a green uparrow. Here they are if anybody wants them. I've attached them as they are so small (1KB).

sb_server.py takes over system when using web interface?

Hello, I am (attempting) to run spambayes pop3proxy on a debian/GNU linux machine (~500mhz celeron). Python v2.3. After setting the BAYESCUSTOMIZE env variable and setting the .ini file to use a pickle for storage, I am able to successfully start spambayes by running the sb_server.py script and configure spambayes through the web interface. However, whenever I attempt to classify ham/spam through the web interface, the sb_server.py process jumps to ~99% cpu and will stay there, during which time no incoming or outgoing pop3/smtp connections are possible. Using the mail forward method of classifying ham/spam seems to work O.K. Any suggestions? I am totally new to python/spambayes and am kind of stuck here! Thanks.

Install problems

I have tried to install the outlook add in two times and have failed on both occasions. I just download the file this morning from http://spambayes.sourceforge.net/windows.html Near the end of the install I get the error message: Unable to register the Dll/ocx Dll Register server failed Code 0x000000000 The log file is empty. Question about Spambayes Outlook Plug In

I did install your program, and did learn it to recognize spam over some time. After a while my Outlook mail program start to do strange things. When I sent an e-mail it stored this e-mail in the outbox folder. Even if I did configure Outlook to send e-mails immediately. Now I have uninstalled Spambayes, but still there is some files left. Where are they? If a user go to the control panel and choose to uninstall Spambayes, so far ok. But after uninstalling it says that not all of the Spambayes files are deleted. That is quite irritating. Wher are these files etc.??? I have deleted the program folder in Programfiles, but still a Spambayes toolbar appears in Outlook. Kjell In Norway

More useful than the message itself would be the clues that it generates with your database. You can get these via the web interface (the classify message box). You should be able to see why it's being classified as spam (i.e. which tokens are making the difference), but you can post them here, too, and someone is bound to comment. It would also help to know how much data you have fed to spambayes - note that it works best with roughly equal numbers of ham and spam, so if this isn't the case, then that might be the problem. =Tony Meyer

Duplicate messages

I installed SpamBayes a week ago on this PC and immediately began receiving duplicate messages. I am running Win2K w/ SP4; Outlook 2002 w/ SP2; SpamBayes binary version 0.81; and have no log files for SpamBayes in my \documents and settings\username\local settings\temp files, although there are other temp files shown. SpamBayes seems to be running OK- filtering most of the spam to the Spam folder now, but most of the time, I get multiple copies of the same message- anywhere from two or three, and up to as many as nineteen. I do receive some messages only once. (I have had SpamBayes running at home for about a month with no problems, using the same mailserver as here at work.) I had several rules here at work which I created in the past which were working fine before SpamBayes, and I unchecked all of them to prevent any conflicts, but it made no difference. I have about six e-mail addresses I monitor. I temporarily disabled all but my primary address, but this made no difference. (I happened to look at my mailbox on the mailserver and saw a couple of e-mails on the mailserver that I had already received!) I then unchecked the "Enable SpamBayes" checkbox in the manager. I immediately stopped getting multiple messages. I then enabled SpamBayes again and began receiving multiple messages again. I am running Norton's Corporate Edition anti-virus which I can't temporarily disable, so I can't eliminate that as a possible cause. Now I'm hitting the proverbial brick wall. Sure could use some words of experience here...

Your logs all just have the "Registered SpamBayes" message, and none have the "Starting SpamBayes" message, so it looks like SpamBayes isn't starting up when you open up Outlook. Maybe the plug-in has been disabled by Outlook? You can see the list of diabled items (and re-enable them) from the "About Outlook" item in the "Help" menu (odd place for it, but not our fault...). =Tony Meyer
