What a great program! Many many thanks ...! SpamBayes works just fine, removes 80%-90% SPAM automatically and learns with each manually deleted spam mail. Wow. Great. Only 4 non-spam mails (out of hundreds) were wrongly treated as spam so far - and they actually looked like Spam, I have to admit. The SPAM catastrophy started in ~1996, when mainstream capitalism discovered the web, culminated in about 800 spam mails last week, and ended when I found SpamBayes, actually by reading a web-article which compared SpamBayes with some other software. The one drawback is that all mails are still fetched from the POP3-box which is really annoying with these 116kB MS-Update.exe-Mails. But still, that only costs connection-money, not my precious time... The Outlook plugin is good, too. Seamless integration is a must. If you have German speaking friends, send them my signature below. It explains WHAT and HOW TO - but also shows one urgent need, because many Dummies might not be able to do all 4 steps ;-) Publish an installer which includes all 4 programs: Python, Python-Win32, SpamBayes and SpamBayes-Outlook-Setup ! Would that be a good idea? Obviously you have to ask Python.org - but they'd gain a lot by being installed on many more computers... ciao, Andreas ---- Hey, super: Ich hab das Unglaubliche geschafft, nämlich SPAM loszuwerden! Endlich, es war zuletzt die absolute Hölle geworden - und nun ist sie scheinbar überstanden... Es gibt ein kostenloses Python-Script "SpamBayes", das sich nahtlos in Outlook, etc. einbaut und mittels einer trainierbaren Bayes-Routine alle eMails, die nach SPAM aussehen, automatisch in zwei Ordner wegsortiert - "wahrscheinlich" (15%) und "fast sicher"(90%). Du musst allerdings einiges downloaden, da Dein Rechner vermutlich die moderne Programmiersprache Python noch nicht spricht, deshalb erstmal Python ("current production version"): http://www.python.org/download/ und die Python-Win32-Routinen: http://starship.python.net/crew/mhammond/win32/Downloads.html danach dann von Sourceforge (die wichtigste OpenSource-Community) https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=61702 das Hauptprogramm spambayes-1.XXX.zip und das Outlook-Addin SpamBayes-Outlook-Setup-0XXX.exe für andere POP-Clients als Outlook gäbe es wohl auch Unterstützung: http://spambayes.sourceforge.net/windows.html Tja und dann einfach alles in obiger Reihenfolge installieren. Am besten Du hast schon zwei vorsortierte Ordner (zB 400 gewünschte und 1300 SPAM-Mails), um das Ersttraining vorzunehmen - wenn Du bisher immer alle SPAMs sofort gelöscht hast, ist das auch nicht so schlimm, dann drückst Du einfach bei jeder ankommenden SPAM mail den neuen gelben Button in Outlook "Delete as SPAM" - und nach und nach wird SpamBayes immer mehr von alleine erkennen. Toll, nech?

Clean Sweep

Hi, Thanks for a great product. If I use "Clean Sweep" from Norton, I seem to lose my listing of identified Spam. Can you tell me where this list is stored on my directory so that I can tell Clean Sweep to ignore it? Thanks, Carol

Basically you need to: * Configure Netscape to get mail from "localhost" rather than from your mail server "pop.example.com". * Run "setup.py install" in the directory you expanded the spambayes archive into. * Run "sb_server.py -b" in the directory that it was installed into (probably "c:\python23\scripts"). * Click on the configuration link at the top right of the browser window that opens. * Enter in your mail server details (top couple of sections). * Click "Save and Shutdown" * Run "sb_server.py" - you'll need to have this running whenever you check mail, so you need to organise that. If you're using Windows, then you can use the "pop3proxy_tray.py" application in the windows directory of the directory you expanded the spambayes archive into instead. What would greatly help *us*, is if you could let us know exactly what in the readme.txt file was too complicated, so that we can improve it for future users. =Tony Meyer

Well, technically spambayes can't (except for bugs) score *wrong* - but the score might not match what you want. It's really impossible for us to answer this. How well spambayes works depends on many factors, not just the number of ham and spam that have been trained. Other factors include how different (token-wise) your ham and spam are, how different your training data and classification data are, and many other things. Really, the best thing would be to try it out and see how things go. It'll certainly be better than blind chance, or no filtering at all. > (Maybe i should sign up for more > spam-crap so i get an even number to train?) Well, presumably you regularly get more, or there isn't much point in using spambayes. Just train on it as it arrives, or train on anything misclassified or unsure. You could also try reducing the amount of ham to match the spam more closely - more isn't always better. trying to send in a suggestion for your software..

I love your software - our CTO suggested it and I dove right and and it is working nicely for me. Being an online figure with alot of traffic to our sites I end up on alot of lists and get hundreds of spam emails every day. I used MailWasher - which was nice -- but it wasnt built into Outlook like yours, and wasnt built to learn. However, one of the good items they had was to 'bounce' my spam back to the spammer. Then the spammer thinks the email address is not active. Do you have plans to add this functionality? Spambayes in Crossover Office

Recently I have been working with a Linux product called crossover office. It is a great little product which allows one to install Office 2000 in a native Linux environment. Outlook works just fine, however, when I try to install Spambayes it says that it cannot find the Outlook installation. I tell it to go ahead and install anyway. I have checked the COM Addin manager and the addin doesn't show up on the list. Is there some way to activate Spambayes in this type of environment??? I would really appreciate any help someone could give me. Thanks

Installation Failure

Spambayes installation has failed due to a failure to register the DLL. I am running XP Service Pack 1. I have disabled my Norton Anti-virus and Norton Internet Security after a fresh reboot, with no other programs running. I get this message: C:\Program Files\Spambayes Outlook AddIn\spambayes_addin.dll Unable to register the DLL/OCS: DllRegisterServer failed: Code 0x00000000 The install and setup worked fine for me on another pc running W2000. I am very impressed with Spambayes and am really anxious to get it running on my XP. Thanks for any help you can provide. Jerry Macon 719-520-1555
