Outlook plugin - training

When the Outlook plugin filters mails, it classifies them as either spam or potential spam, and can put them in appropriate folders. In the spam/potential spam folders, there is a "Recover from Spam" button available, and in other folders there is a "Delete as spam" button. These buttons add the message to the training database as well as taking the appropriate action. One thing I don't see, however, is a means of confirming the classifier's decisions as correct. A "yes, that is spam" button for the spam folder, and a "yes, that's ham" button in non-spam folders. As I'm starting from a very small message base, I worry that correct classifications are still somewhat based on "luck", and training based on correct decisions would help to increase both my and the classifier's confidence level. I can do this by regular retraining, but that has 2 disadvantages: it's much clumsier than simply clicking on a "clever boy!" button, and it relies on me not deleting messages until I do a training run. Much of the ham I get is "read and forget", so I'd rather delete immediately. When I get a chance to dive into the code, I'll see how hard this would be to implement. Paul.

I don't believe you need this. I think that the classifier automatically trains on messages as they arrive (or at least on messages that it's sure about). You only need to retrain if it has made a mistake, or if it's unsure. Installation Error

I installed spambayes today and while installing I received an error message that there is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive \device\harddisk1\dr3. I cancel the error message it finish loading. It is operational in outlook 2000 now, but when I start outlook I get the above error message. After hitting cancel a few times it will go away and outlook will load. What is causing this error? Thanks, Greg

Configuring Outlook

Greetings! I just installed SpamBayes and am very impressed with it. However there is one clarification I would like to see in the documentation, and one functional improvement I would like to see. ==== Documentation ==== Apparently (please correct me if I am wrong) there is no way in Outlook to globally modify every table-view. That means that every folder you have in your Outlook will need to have the "Spam" column added manually. For someone like me, that is going to take quite a long time. I have been using email for quite a few years! :-) It would be good if the manual noted that the "Spam" column will need to be added to *every* folder that you want it to appear in, and that there is no global "view change" possible like there is with Desktop folders. ==== Functionality ==== When I ran the Filter for the first time, it told me it found 37 definite spam, and 5 unsure. But it did not tell me where I could find those files. It would be nice if it output a textfile report, or some such thing, that told me where I could find these 5 unsure ones. So, that is all the ideas I have. If there is anything I can do to help you with this product, I would be glad to be of service. cannot remove buttons

hello, I recently installed the spambayes outlook addin on w2k. after trying an online spam filtering service, I decided to remove the spambayes addin. I ran the uninstaller and it claimed to have successfully removed the addin. however, the buttons still appear in my outlook toolbar with no functions beneath them when clicked. how can I remove these buttons? mike.

Spam filter stopped working

I installed the Outlook add-in and it worked fine for a few weeks. Then it just stopped filtering out the spam. I can't figure out what broke. My log file is attached. spambayes filter - won't "remeber" my SPAM directory

I'm running Outlook 2000 under Win 98, and I HAD Spambayes running just great... until I tried to show it off to a colleague. Now it won't remember my SPAM directory. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing it to no avail. Is there a way of entering this info via a config file? Ian Willson

My apologies. It occurred to me after sending that email that maybe I should try shutting the pop3proxy down and restarting it. That worked like a charm. Truly sorry if anyone wasted time on my silly question, Adam Endicott

I just ran across spambayes, and I'm eager to try it out. I believe that I got it all set up correctly. I'm using Eudora, so I'm running the pop3 proxy. It seems to be working as far as I can tell, everything is getting classified as unsure, which is what I would expect (headers are getting set correctly). However, messages aren't showing up for review. Actually that's not entirely accurate. At first nothing was showing up (I sent myself a couple of test emails, and they didn't show up in the web interface review messages page). At this time I had only set up the pop3 server, not the smtp server. So I tried setting up the smtp server through the web interface, and it said it was successful. Next I attempted to set eudora to send to the smtp proxy, but I keep getting errors saying it can't find localhost (I tried both localhost and localhost:25 as the smtp server address in eudora, neither worked...I don't know much about how email servers work, so I could be way off here, but "localhost" works fine for the pop3 server in eudora). Anyway, after I set that, the four emails I had received to that time (2 from me, 2 spam) showed up in review messages. I classified the two spams as spam. I have since set my smtp server in eudora back to what it originally was. I have now received 4 more emails that aren't showing up on the review messages page. All I see are the two test emails to myself that I haven't classified. Am I missing something? I'm running python 2.2.2 on windows 98SE. Any help fixing either the review messages problem or the smtp server problem would be greatly appreciated. Adam Endicott

corrupt database bug

Hey there. My computer shut off over the weekend due to a power outage, and this morning I found 3800 untested new emails in my inbox. Filtering was off and it claimed to have no database so I had to retrain it. I've attached the log I think is relevant. Sending an email because sourceforge is intimidating. Thanks! :-)
