Hi, I use Incredimail as my default e-mail handler. I have just installed Spambayes but do not know how to set it up. Does Spambayes work with Incredimail, and if so could you give me some basic directions how? Regards Eric
This question gets asked periodically, and the answer seems to be that Incredimail cannot be configured to work with SpamBayes. (For the most recent instance, see http://mail.python.org/pipermail/spambayes/2006-August/019627.html. For a little more detail, see http://mail.python.org/pipermail/spambayes/2005-December/018512.html.) I don't think an Incredimail user has ever given a definitive answer, though. You might be able to adapt the instructions on http://email.about.com/od/incredimailtips/qt/et_free_hotmail.htm. It talks about setting the incoming mail server type and address. You may need to install FreePOPs. If you get it working and would like to give back to the SpamBayes effort, please post the steps necessary to get SpamBayes and Incredimail working together. At a minimum, it'll be in the list archive for future reference. In the best case, it'll end up in the FAQ. ________________________________ From: spambayes-bounces@python.org [mailto:spambayes-bounces@python.org] On Behalf Of Eric Sent: Sunday, September 10, 2006 11:17 PM To: spambayes@python.org Subject: [Spambayes] Incredimail Hi, I use Incredimail as my default e-mail handler. They had no support contact. Most contact categories were of the bizdev/investor relations/pr type. I think their main goal is making money, not supporting their user base. Maybe someone would like to download the Incredimail installer and see if the binary can be "patched". ;-) Skip
Being curious and paranoid (like any experienced programmer), I tried to install Incredimail in a scratch virtual machine. Unfortunately, it's a network-based installer, and our firewall blocks part of it. I could ask to have the file let through, but I've got work to do. I didn't find the site confidence-inspiring either. -----Original Message----- From: skip@pobox.com [mailto:skip@pobox.com] Sent: Monday, September 11, 2006 9:33 AM To: Jesse Pelton Cc: Eric; spambayes@python.org Subject: Re: [Spambayes] Incredimail Jesse> This question gets asked periodically, and the answer seems to be Jesse> that Incredimail cannot be configured to work with Jesse> SpamBayes. I've been wondering about Incredimail myself, since my father-in-law uses it. I really wish he would stop... Anyway, I was looking around and I found this tutorial setup for Uniserve customers setting up their email with Incredimail. http://www.uniserve.com/?page=support/email/incredimail It appears that Incredimail uses standard POP3 and SMTP settings just like everyone else, so Spambayes should work fine setup as a proxy... Helpful? There's a high degree of overlap between that and the tutorial I found, which is encouraging. I'm not quite sure why the one I found wanted FreePOPs installed; it seems unnecessary. Uniserve's tutorial is short and to the point. Anyway, I hope ebritt@westnet.com.au will give it a try and let us all know how it goes. It sure would be nice to be able to point Incredimail users to a FAQ. Skip, I'm at work, in my mild-mannered reporter disguise. ;-) -----Original Message----- From: spambayes-bounces@python.org [mailto:spambayes-bounces@python.org] On Behalf Of Eric Johnson Sent: Monday, September 11, 2006 1:30 PM To: spambayes@python.org Subject: Re: [Spambayes] Incredimail I've been wondering about Incredimail myself, since my father-in-law uses it. iirc, the problem with incredimail was, at least at one time, that it doesn't expose the functions necessary to redirect the client to localhost. If it did that, then their prog would be able to client any pop3 account, and they didn't want to be in that business. Maybe that's changed, but then if it has, Incredimail wouldn't be so incredi, now would it? <wink> Jesse Pelton wrote:

This tutorial Eric Johnson posted: http://www.uniserve.com/?page=support/email/incredimail suggests you should be able to. Click the "General Setup" link and scroll down about 2/3 of the way until you see the "Incoming and Outgoing mail servers" dialog. Assuming it accepts "localhost" as an incoming mail server, it should work. Any Windows folks here want to give it a whirl and report back to the group? I gather the main attraction for most folks is all the little gewgaws people can add to their emails. I suppose the Incredimail folks make money by displaying ads to their users, though they do have a version that costs money, so maybe the free version is semi-crippled or something. Skip
Incredimail Xe Build ID: 5202479, will accept "localhost" in the incoming and outgoing server fields. I downloaded it and tried it myself. For a laugh, you should read the EULA.
