[Twisted-Python] Using Twisted for a clustering library.

I've been working on a cluster library for MOSIX and I've noticed that parts could possibly be replaced with some Twisted stuff. Briefly what I need to be able to do is the following: o Have the server spawn off client processes and communicates with them using IPC. o The client process waits for a task to arrive from the server and replies back to the server with the results of the complete task. o The server sends tasks to available clients then waits for a client to repond, sends the now idle client the next task and finally handles the response. After browsing through the Twisted source, I'm guessing that I'll need to write my own Reactor, Protocol, Factory, Application classes and possibly a new main module. [Twisted-Python] Twisted 0.18.0rc2

There were a few bugs found in Twisted 0.18.0rc1 -- problems with redirection in static (--path) webservers, some XML-dependancies, and missing plugins for the TCP port forwarder. If there are no more bugs found for a bit, then 0.18.0rc2 will be released as 0.18.0. Thanks for the help, Twisted 0.18.0 is shaping up to be a *solid* release. [Twisted-Python] idea for file transfers over PB

suggestion: transfer metainformation about file objects over PB, and create wrapper instances on the receiving end. so remotefile.read() executes on the remote perspective. any arguments for/against this? feasible? i'll struggle with the source a little, but i doubt my current python/twisted skills suffice to make this work. paul

[Twisted-Python] Arms Crisis

Anyone who has programmed in depth with Twisted probably know about arm()ing deferreds by now. Nobody has complained as loudly as I thought they would, so I'm not sure if this is really that big of a problem, but I'm questioning my original design decisions regarding .arm(). Originally, I wanted it to be easily determineable whether your callback would be called before your stack had been escaped; so the system you returned your Deferred to would .arm() it afterwards. However, this creates lots of weird, confusing corners for callbacks to get lost in, and I have yet to see a situation where it actually matters whether your current stack frame is escaped before the callback happens. I would like to propose that we create an experimental mode where .arm() be made to do nothing (for backwards compatibility), and that .callback() call whatever callbacks are available immediately; and .addCallbacks() (and friends) will immediately call any pending callbacks. If after an extended period of testing it is discovered that there are no bugs created with this approach, we should remove .arm() entirely. I'd like some feedback on this, though. Does anyone else think that callbacks sometimes happening and sometimes not when .addCallbacks() is called makes a difference? [Twisted-Python] latest release & solaris

Hi just a couple of notes of about the latest release 1) the tarball (gz) for unix seems to have some funny permissions/symlinks/umask? in it. This barfed using solaris tar, with an error about not being able to create the file, so I downloaded the windows version and unzipped that instead, and chmod -R to something sensible. 2) the C extension module cBanana.c actually has some C++ style comments in it. I think this is fine for gcc, but solaris' cc compiler is less forgiving. I just edited the file. other than those two gotchas, it seems to work. thanks Jon

[Twisted-Python] APIs changes for TCP and UDP

1) Client TCP connects should be allowed to bind to a specific interface and port, e.g.: reactor.clientTCP('example.com', 80, p, bindAddress=('1.2.3.4', 999)) 2) UDP Ports's API should be formalized. Basically, the way UDP works from what I can see is that you create a Port, and for client connections you call the Port's createConnection(addr) method. Currently this returns a transport which is hooked up to a protocol, which is silly, it should return the protocol instance it contructs: port = reactor.listenUDP(8080, dnsFactory) clientProtocol = port.createConnection(("example.com", 53)) clientProtocol.query("....")

Hey, Here are a draft for "Resources". This one follows Itamars suggestion (which I after some dispute with myself found necessary). The path-stuff is awful, so ignore it. A combination of the module posixpath (undocumented) and os.path is a good replacement. Otherwise, there's some random routines, and the Interfaces aren't specified. Any ideas what must in and what must go? Request.render is silly :) This is just a "proof of concept", but I fear I've done some fundemental errors. Especially the "resolving" of objects is idiotic and naive. Any suggestions for replacements? Anyway, I think this is enough code to make the ftp-server resourceindependent once and for all. Oh, and last there's some unused code there too, but please don't mind. \\ benjamin

The API is now much improved, and mostly stable. The main change was to create an explicit reactor object, using which you can schedule events, connect or listen on TCP/UDP/SSL ports, run methods in a thread pool, and so on. The tools that come with Twisted have been extended to allow choosing the reactor at runtime.
