When run with the line client.py:19 commented out, the script blocks before sending out any file chunks, if the line is uncommented (effectively calling the 'dummy' method remotely), everything works as expected. Digging around in the sources, I found out that t.p.u.Pager registers itself to the collector's pb broker as a pageProducer. When resumeProducing is called on the broker, it asks the FilePager instance for the next page, which leads to the invocation of the following method on FilePager:: def sendNextPage(self): """ Get the first chunk read and send it to collector. """ if not self.chunks: return val = self.chunks.pop(0) self.producer.resumeProducing() self.collector.callRemote("gotPage", val) As the t.b.FileSender producer does not yet had a chance to write something to the FilePager, the method returns straight away without sending anything. As anything was sent, the Broker.resumeProducing method is never called again, and thus the FilePager.sendNextPage neither. The problem is caused by the calling chain of the FilePager constructor: FilePager.__init__() -> Pager.__init__() -> broker.registerPageProducer(FilePager) -> transport.registerProducer(broker) -> broker.resumeProducing() -> FilePager.sendNextPage() -> <no data, don't send anything> -> FilePager.startProducing(fd) -> FileSender().beginFileTransfer(fd, FilePager) -> FilePager.registerProducer(FileSender) -> FileSender.resumeProducing() -> FilePager.write(data) -> <store data, wait for sendNextPage to be called> Simply inverting these two method calls (Pager.__init__ and FilePager.startProducing) solves the problem. The same problem does not appear when calling the 'dummy' method (client.py:19) because the data for the method call is waiting to be sent out by the reactor and the transport does not call 'resumeProducing' on the broker until the next iteration. This allows the call to FilePager.startProducing to complete before sendNextPage is ever called on it. Does this sound correct? Hello, I have a question about the "best practices" on making callbacks and making sure you don't hog the reactor. So you pass a deferred to a client, who attaches a chain of callbacks that might probably do some CPU intensive stuff. How should one guard for that? The obvious solution to me for the server part would be to do reactor.callLater(0, d.callback, arg) insted of d.callback(arg) What about the client part? Hello, I'm trying out Twisted/Conch as a replacement for a script based upon Paramiko for transferring some files around. Hi, in a GUI application I'm using quite a comprehensive chain of deferreds and I'm running the mainloop from the glib2reactor. At a certain point of my application I need to terminate the entire chain of deferreds to make sure that no more data is loaded and processed. Stopping the reactor does not work as the entire GUI would terminate, too. I heard that Python 3.3 may support coroutine natively via yield generator. I am interested in how this thing can affect twisted development. The most compelling feature of twisted for me is to support a large set of protocols and the most important...it can run on windows flawlessly. Does anyone else hate the confusing new method names they've chosen? Hi, I'm a Twisted newbie and I'm working on a custom ssh daemon for serving git. I happened to read one of the example files sshsimpleserver.py at * http://twistedmatrix.com/projects/conch/documentation/examples/* . At line 93 ExampleSession is registered as an Adapter for ExampleAvatar adapting it to session.ISession. As i understand, to actually do the adaptation a call like ISession(ExampleAvatar) has to be done (?). This call hasn't been done. Am i missing something? Thanks in advance, Anshul

I posted to the mailing list a few years back with a Deferred class that can log what callbacks were called, what result they returned, etc. It would be very easy to add callback timing information to that. You'd just insert a callback into the chain of any deferred you wanted to monitor to have it log the timing of the various calls that were made.
