Characterizing this as a "dead end" is probably inaccurate.  There seems to be consensus that it would be a good idea if someone had the time to do it.  For now though, your conclusion is probably right.

I would like to ask commit permission, at least to merge the 10 patches from eeshangarg ... as looks like there is little interest in merging the cleanup work.

Since I'd offered it to you in the past and you'd turned it down, I'm happy to reverse that decision :).  I take it that https://github.com/adiroiban.keys is an adequate source of credential material for you?
