I can't believe I missed this. It should have been so obvious considering I had to install gcc the other day after a make failed. I don't know how I left out the devel packages when I flattened/reinstalled last week. Thanks for making me look dumb, Fritz

Your problem is here. Something like 'yum install python-devel' should do the trick.
