I think that databases were specifically designed to store accounting information, actually.
Maybe in the 60's they were, but they have much more power now than they did in those days. (Codd and Date would give you a more elaborate answer ... ;) But the optimal choice for any given application usually depends on a multitude of details, so these generalizations have limited usefulness.
