Hi Geoffrey,
Take a look at Matt's pull request [1].
I think this is mostly for experimentation and hedging against the future, but the main short-term use case is to be able to call yt from inside blender [2], which is written in python 3.

No, absolutely not. We're going to ship Python 2.7 for the foreseeable future. This is to enable embedding yt inside Blender, which is Python 3.X-only. It won't be a full stack.
