Last week at SciPy, Nathan Goldbaum and Meagan Lang gave a talk about the "demeshening" project. This is the project they're working on to build out next-gen particle support in yt, based around removing the octree indexing and adding in bitmap indexing, and in the process getting a better representation of the particles.

Anyhow, the talk is online and is really quite good, so I wanted to pass it along. It goes into some detail about what it means for people using yt, as well as the underlying machinery.
