Hey peeps, So it turns out that a bunch of people have viewed the "how to use reason" screencast that we put out last week. It seems like screencasts may be a good way of introducing certain concepts in the yt universe, because it really shows our audience exactly *how* to get certain functionality to work (along with a rewind button!). With that in mind, I wanted to see if anyone else wanted to create a screencast on some topic in yt. I tried to create a "How to" on making a yt screencast on the following page to help you out if you decide to make one. Furthermore, Matt and I outlined several possibilities for topics on the following page: https://bitbucket.org/yt_analysis/yt/wiki/Screencasts Topics include getting up and running, parallelization in yt, halo finding/usage, volume rendering, time-series/movie-making, defining your own field, etc. If you'd like to make one, feel free to volunteer and put your name next to one of the topics on the wiki (it should be editable by all), then just post one when you get a chance. We can put it in our blog and update the site with news of it. This may be a good way to supplement the documentation. Let me know if you have any comments! Cameron
Hi Cameron, I love the screencasts -- I just made one about getting started developing, record on my Linux machine using gtk-recordmydesktop, with some editing in PiTiVi, which comes with Ubuntu. I added a title card to the front, which I think anybody can do with PiTiVi or iMovie. (If you want to do this, the title card I made is here: http://yt-project.org/files/title_card.png ; you can resize the image and center the current contents it to match whatever size movie you record.) Should we upload to both Vimeo and YouTube? YouTube has a nice video editor now, and it also has integration with various nice things. I like Vimeo on the whole more, but YouTube is a bit more everywhere. What are your thoughts? -Matt On Tue, Sep 6, 2011 at 6:37 PM, Cameron Hummels <chummels@astro.columbia.edu> wrote:

I think that YouTube has unlimited upload, but limits the time you can have in each video. One major downside to YouTube is that from what I can tell, creating groups/channels/etc is pretty cumbersome compared to Vimeo. I may be wrong, though, so someone else should feel free to correct me on this. -Matt

I like vimeo, especially since we have a bunch of yt videos up there now. I'll also note that G+ allows you to upload movies there directly and it makes it available right away in multiple resolutions (up to 720p i think). I just tested a video upload and I think a public post would be added to your public Picasa albums. Not that we should necessarily post there, but there's nothing wrong with posting multiple places. two cents, sam On Tue, Sep 27, 2011 at 1:49 PM, Matthew Turk <matthewturk@gmail.com> wrote:

Great work, Matt! Thanks for taking everyone through the sometimes confusing steps of getting started developing! Oh, and I really like the title slide! I personally like the look of vimeo, as it appears more professional, and we already have a lot of content there. For now, my vote is to just upload to vimeo, but if the situation with youtube changes, we can always switch down the road. Cameron On 9/27/11 4:21 PM, Sam Skillman wrote:

Nice work. One of the students in Heather's class had a last name of Mitchell. I had to stifle a chuckle. On Tue, Sep 27, 2011 at 5:03 PM, Cameron Hummels < chummels@astro.columbia.edu> wrote:

+1 for Vimeo. YouTube can be a sewer. On Tue, Sep 27, 2011 at 2:03 PM, Cameron Hummels <chummels@astro.columbia.edu> wrote:
