This is my first time using yt so bear with me please... Every time I try to upload a file as FLASH, I get an error message saying that it couldn't figure out the output type. I even went back and tried using a sample file, still got the same error message. Thanks, Nick

Hi Nick, Welcome to yt! Sorry to hear you're having problems.
Every time I try to upload a file as FLASH, I get an error message saying that it couldn't figure out the output type. I even went back and tried using a sample file, still got the same error message.
Can you send more information? We cannot diagnose any problems without much more detail. Were you using the command line interface, or are you trying to load from a script? If the latter, can you send the script? What FLASH sample file did you try? jeff

Hi Nick, In particular, it would be most helpful to know which version of FLASH the file is and if it is a particle file, a plotfile, or a checkpoint file. Best, John ZuHone On Mar 23, 2012, at 12:11 PM, j s oishi wrote:

Hi Nick, No worries! Another quick question, which may reflect some ignorance on my part. Do you have the file "RD0005/RedshiftOutput0005"? Unless I am mistaken, the example script is there to show just how such a read would be done, and what the resulting plot would be, but I don't think that we provide a place to download that file. That script only works if the directory "RD0005" containing that file is in your path, and the file doesn't come with the distribution. If you issue the load command on a non-existent file, the error message you saw is what you get: In [3]: pf = load("blah") yt : [ERROR ] 2012-03-23 12:51:56,506 Couldn't figure out output type for blah Which means that a) the example page probably should be a little clearer that these files are not part of the distribution and b) that we should probably have a more explicit error message when one attempts to load a non-existent file. Hey John, Okay that cleared a lot of things up, I thought the file came with the program just as a sample to use. So that's my mistake. Hi Nick, In a terminal, you'll need to navigate to the directory where cloud_hdf5_plt_cnt_0221 exists. Once you're in that directory, you should be able to load the file into yt by simply typing: yt load cloud_hdf5_plt_cnt_0221 In the command line. This will start an ipython session with your dataset loaded as 'pf'. If that doesn't work then there is either a problem with how yt is reading your data or you are trying to read in data that yt doesn't support yet. I know John asked earlier, but it would help if you would let us know what version of FLASH produced the dataset. If you want lower latency feedback, please feel free to join us on IRC: http://yt-project.org/irc.html Best, Nathan Goldbaum Graduate Student Astronomy & Astrophysics, UCSC goldbaum@ucolick.org http://www.ucolick.org/~goldbaum On Mar 23, 2012, at 10:07 AM, Nicholas David Tillman wrote:

Hi Nick, You need to give the full path to your file for load to read it. If it's in the current directory you are in, then just the filename should suffice, but if it's in this directory called "SCRATCH", then you need to provide the full path to that directory in the load command. Can you go to this directory and try it out, or have you done that already? Best, John On Mar 23, 2012, at 1:07 PM, Nicholas David Tillman wrote:

Hi John, The path name to get to my files is "/scratch/01911/nicktill" however the yt/python program is installed at "/home1/01911/nicktill/Code/yt" so I think that's the step I forgot to load my files. yt load cloud_hdf5_plt_cnt_0221 -- command didn't work because it didn't recognize yt as a command. How do I exactly specify where I want to load the file if I have the pathway I want to use? Hi Nick,
Sorry, I'm a little confused. RD0005/RedshiftOutput0005 is an Enzo file.

Hi Nick,
In particular, it would be most helpful to know which version of FLASH the file is and if it is a particle file, a plotfile, or a checkpoint file.

Hi Nick,
Welcome to yt!

Hey John, I figured out my problem. I forgot to use the command "source activate" before being able to load stuff to yt and opening the command line. Thanks for all the help. Thanks! Okay that cleared a lot of things up, I thought the file came with the program just as a sample to use. So that's my mistake. But for my own file which is in the format "cloud_hdf5_plt_cnt_0221", it does exist in this 'SCRATCH' directory and I get that exact error message. So is the problem possibly is that it can't locate it?
Thanks, Nick

Hi Nick,
No worries!
If you issue the load command on a non-existent file, the error message you saw is what you get:
In [3]: pf = load("blah") yt : [ERROR ] 2012-03-23 12:51:56,506 Couldn't figure out output type for blah
Which means that a) the example page probably should be a little clearer that these files are not part of the distribution and b) that we should probably have a more explicit error message when one attempts to load a non-existent file. Sorry about the confusion!
Best,
John

Hey Jeff, Well I was using the command line interface and the flash file I tried as a trial run was "RD0005/RedshiftOutput0005" as it shows on the home page under examples. Also if it's more helpful to know I am using the latest FLASH version and the files I think are checkpoint files.
