Mailman Just Stop Working

Im using a qmailtoaster as described here: http://wiki.qmailtoaster.com/index.php/CentOS_5_QmailToaster_Install My developers have insisted on using mailman instead of EZMLM. Its all the same to me. I have installed mailman into /home/mailman/mydomain/ Everything was working fine. I seriously have no idea why mailman stopped working. It was like one day, I got a call, and it was no longer working. when i stop/start/restart with mailmanctl, things seem fine, no errors. The web interface appears to work fine. I have a stage server that I test all updates and new ideas on just to be sure I dont brick my production mailserver, and mailman works fine on that box. Any suggestions on how to debug this are welcome. Chris Penn...

Site admin per mail domain

Hi, Please forgive me if my question is a display of ignorance. I've only very recently switched from ezmlm-idx to mailman and am still trying to get my head around the difference in concept. I've searched the FAQs and archives but wasn't actually too sure what exactly to use as search terms. I have noticed that Mailman identifies lists by there names only but allows them to run in different mail domains. I realise that I can also have different domains and host names for the web interfaces. However, what I cannot find out for sure is if a site admin only exists per Mailman install or also per mail domain. In other words, can I have an admin who is allowed to create new lists (something I understand to be exclusively a site admin task) for a certain mail domain but not on other mail domains. If I was running lists test test1 test2 and they were reachable on test(a)lists.example.com, test1(a)lists.example.net, test2(a)lists.example.org could I have one account which can create lists in example.com, another one which can create lists in example.net and still another one which can create lists in example.org? Also, is there a trick to have lists test3(a)lists.example.net and test3(a)lists.example.com simultaneously without needing to work with aliases somehow? Cheers, Christian

I recommend running cleanarch on that mbox before importing it, to ensure that it is ok. I took the second option in that FAQ, as it was a new list. Copy the Mbox file into the private directory after running it through cleanarch, then run the arch command to generate the HTML archives for the web interface. Andrew.

is it possible to moderate E-mail without webpanel ? using only e-mail commands ?

Hi, is it possible to moderate Mailman newsletter E-mails without Mailman Webpanel ? So, user (administrator) sending newsletter e-mail to list(a)example.com and then mailman server returning message in the original form to show, how it will look like. If everything is fine then E-mail could be some how approved. Just like in ezmlm. Will it be possible to configure something like this ? With kind regards Zalezny

But I think that although I can change my mailer configuration it's Pipermail's job to do that conversion. There are lots of broken MTAs around. There's another machine running qmail and ezmlm with MHonArc as it's archiver. As you can see here http://listas.conectiva.com.br/listas/linux-br/arquivo/2000/06/msg00691.html everything works fine and without any special configuration on MHonArc. Ezmlm doesn't touch the Sender: header at all, Majordomo sets it to the owner of the list, and (AFAICT) Listserv sets it to the list itself. This would seem to me to indicate that incidences of mail being returned inappropriately to the sender are infrequent, at worst. The important question would seem to be "what's appropriate?" From RFC 2822, 3.6.2: "The originator fields indicate the mailbox(es) of the source of the message." Given this, the definition of the Sender and From headers, and the example given in this section, it seems that Outlook's interpretation of the fields ("SENDER on behalf of FROM") is reasonable. Mailman is not the originator of the message, so it should not be tampering with the From: or Sender: fields at all. It might be appropriate for Mailman to add Resent-* headers, depending on how one reads RFC 2822, 3.6.6. I personally don't think it's necessary or useful, since list servers add their own List-* headers, per RFC 2369. The Resent-* headers seem to exist for individuals resending messages, not automated systems. This is supported by the RFC: "Resent fields are used to identify a message as having been reintroduced into the transport system by a user."

I'll second the recommendation for Postfix (and I think that Mailman development is done on Postfix as well). I use Postfix on small boxes with one user (ie my own), as well as machines with upwards of 25k users, and on FreeBSD, Linux, and Solaris 8. I'm very happy with its performance, ease of use, flexibility and ease of installation / Sendmail compatibility. It also has a great (and helpful) user community.
