I think I found part of why it is different:
sentences = re.split(r'((?:\.|\?|!|\n\n)\s*)', msg)
is not splitting msg correctly because windows and unix have different
sentences = re.split(r'((?:\.|\?|!|\n\n|\r\n)\s*)', msg)
