While we're talking about newbies, this fits in for a particular class
of them...

The May/June 2007 issue of Computing in Science & Engineering (CiSE)
is devoted to "Python: Batteries Included". CiSE is a peer-reviewed
joint publication of the IEEE Computer Society and the American
Institute of Physics. The two lead articles (by Dubois and Oliphant)
are posted at http://computer.org/cise.

Actually, years ago, it was because of this publication that I became
aware of Python for scientific computing, and started exploring it as
an alternative to other languages. I was stunned to find Numerical
Python, Numarray, and finally Matplotlib
(http://matplotlib.sourceforge.net) which produces some really nice
graphs.
