Was it a government job? Some government jobs that require having
access to sensitive information would require that. It's not illegal if
it is a job requirement. Background checks for security clearances do
that, and more. I even had to take a lie-detector test as part of one.
It is not considered mandatory, but if you refuse you simply don't get
the clearances and the job that needs them.
